Hi

Im a 20 year old irish female who is thinking of moving to Chicago in late Sept/early Oct.

I will be coming on my own but will have a friend come in January(shes female also)

Firstly is there any areas in Chicago that have a lot of irish living there? That would probably be my port of call for a few weeks!

In terms of areas what would people recommend for a female? I will be looking to houseshare and my budget will be around $700 a month. Yes i have read the introductory post but still nice to get opinions.

In terms of jobs what are the prospects? I know this whole global economy crisis! I dont have a college degree so I would be looking for ordinary jobs...bartending, retail worker etc...

Hope someone can answer some questions!
Thanks!

The Irish-American community is widespread all over the Chicago area -- particularly on the NW and SW sides of the city. But these are generally people who have been here for generations. On the North Side, one place where Irish "off the boat" gather is the Abbey Pub ... The Abbey Pub, Chicago, Live Music, Irish Pub, Good Food on www.abbeypub.com ... It's also a reasonably crime-free, though not trendy, part of town where you will find reasonable rents. Safety is probably a block-to-block issue in this area, though, so wouldn't rent in this area without getting a look first.

Another nearby organization to keep in mind is the Irish American Heritage Center, Irish American Heritage Center - Home which hosts Irish-themed events as well as private parties. May be job opportunities here, too.

When do you turn 21?

Would you be open to a roommate situation? My lease is up August 1st.

I used to be a regular at Abbey Pub. I don't ever recall seeing or hearing "off the boat" Irish gathering there. Or anywhere else in this neighborhood either.

They exist. They are scattered in Irving Park, Mayfair,Portage Park, Jefferson Park,Avondale, etc...

I know because I have met them.

Come to think of it, they do have the Celtic jam sessions there on Sundays. Maybe that's when the "off-the-boaters" hang out there. But they don't just hang out there as a matter of course, not conspicuously anyway.

The "Zimne Piwo" under the Old Style sign drives them off.
