CTA Station Activity Map
I stumbled across this new interactive map on Gaper's Block today. It's a pretty neat concept. Each station for all El lines is interactive and will bring you to various restaurants, bars, shops, etc within walking distance. I know I'm always in a situation where I am early for an appointment and want to kill time so this is perfect for me.
It is powered by google maps so I guess the only limitation is that google is not the quickest when it comes to removing businesses that have since closed.

Neat idea, but kinda glitchy.... I picked "choose your own adventure" (whatever that means) around the Western Brown Line stop and it started giving me Peruvian cuisine way over on N Elston (Beyond where the Brown Line ends).
I tried "free wifi" around the Adams Red Line stop and it gave me a place up off of Fullerton.
Still, neat idea.

Centerstage (basically the Sun-Times' poor imitation of Metromix) has been doing something similar for a while now, called The Virtual L. You pick a line, then pick a stop, and it lists all the bars, restaurants, music venues, etc., in its database near the stop.

Or if you like a particular message board (like LTHFORUM), you enter that into the "find" box and it will show restaurants referenced in the area.

Thanks for the interest in my CTA Google Map. I created it back in 2005 when Google first opened up their Maps API. It was pretty much the first of its kind allowing people to visualize what's around a particular L station. Since then, sites like Centerstage have entered into the picture and have done a decent job at providing a similar service. If you experience any issues with the map it's likely because Google has the wrong information. When you use my map to perform a search I'm basically taking the physical address of the L station and doing a search for what is near there. It's really no different than if you were to do a manual search for "Free WiFi loc: 201 S. Wabash Ave. 60602" Anyway, I welcome all feedback and I appreciate your interest. -Ed Knittel - tastypopsicle.com

^^Good job man. I've found a couple of awesome hole-in-the-wall taqueria's and even a couple of excellent watering holes with that map.
