I agree with you here, nor do I believe a licensed counselor would ever say this.

I don't need to read your links because I know that AIDS in urban US cities is often prevolent in black communities. But many of these communities are also poverty-stricken and have less access to quality education and birth control than more affluent communities. I think where you and I disagree is that you blame the people and I blame the culture. Buying condoms is often a stigma, it belittles a man's masculinity. This is one of the challenges to condom use in other countries and it is also a problem in many black communities. Yes, the people make up the culture - but it's a larger issue than people simply not caring. The only thing that will change this culture is education - and not the type of education kids get in schools. Sex-ed in school, imo, does diddly-squat - even in white schools in the northern burbs, and the reason for this is because it is hampered by politics set forth through the conservative, often religious, right.

If I had time I'd look for statistics about misconceptions high school kids have about sex, pregnancy, and std's - but I think this is general knowledge. Add to this crappy education about true facts in public schools a culture where money is tight (why spend $5 on a pack of condoms?) people don't think it will ever happen to them, and a general lack of knowledge about the true facts.

Why do you conservative southerners deny science so often? It really makes you look stupid. Like neanderthal stupid.

I had a friend studying aerospace engineering at Georgia Tech (one of the top schools for this field), and he was all up in arms because there was a "grass roots" movement in Alabama to pass a law mandating that the value of Pi be changed from 3.14...... to 3. Why? Becuause apparently there is some discussion of this in the Bible where it talks about the construction of Solomon's Temple. Several elected legislators were on board for this. Could you imagine the effect this would have had on math instruction in that state? It's just incredible to me that people are this dumb. It's like saying 1 + 1 = 4!

This type of mentality is exceptionally dangerous. I assume you are a woman -- thus, "people like you" are far more likely to contract HIV from unsafe sexual practices due to the unequal amount of fluid exchange between males and females during sexual intercourse. This why a disproportionate amount of women worldwide contract the disease despite the prevalence of males engaging in risky behaviors.

Oh, and FYI - lesbians are the least likely among the population to transmit the disease sexually, precisely because of the small amount of fluid exchange that occurs during lesbian sex - thus blowing your "I'm not gay" argument completely out of the water.

No, I went to an all girls Catholic school and we were taught abstinence.

Regardless of whatever the stats are there will always be a risk and thats enough reason to practice safe sex.
