There are many other neighborhoods you can live in as well, but without knowing more about you I will not mention them.
If you can make due with a 1 bedroom your possibilities are far greater.

I add Mayfair Park,Old Irving Park,Union Ridge,Oriole Park,Old Norwood Park,O'Hare, and Norwood Park West to the Blue Line mix as well...
You really can't go wrong with any of them.

It's always full. If you can get tenants to pay, you aren't overcharging.
Our building does have huge units, though. And they're condos.

*a safe area
*2 bedrooms
*Near some public transit that doesn't require a transfer (e.g., no bus to subway)
*$1000 or less
I realize my budget is low, but I don't mind a commute of up to 45 or 50 minutes (or more if absolutely necessary). I also don't care about living anywhere "cool." I would prefer north or northwest of the loop for family reasons, but I'm flexible there too.
Any thoughts?

You would like either Oak Park or even LaGrange, IL. These areas are great and with this economic downturn, you'll find a nice cozy 2br aptmt.
I think these are good for your buck...more importantly for your family

It looks like neither of those areas has much on Craigslist. Do you think there is a reasonable selection within my budget and constraints?

You are not going to find many landlords in LaGrange using craigslist. It is oldschool. Local paper and the local real estate office are the way to go.
Oak Park has same setup, but prices are all the map, and you need to know that some areas in Oak Park are NO BARGAIN, as the crime increases quite a bit as you leave the better parts...

Oak Park has a free tenant referral service through the village government, but all they will do is encourage white people to move in to an area that is primarily black, or encourage black people to move into an area that is primarily white. They exist to combat segregation in housing.

Rents in Oak Park are reasonable compared to the city. There are some areas where crime is slightly higher, but it's not as significant a difference as most people seem to think. I personally would want at least a few blocks to buffer the Austin neighborhood in Chicago, though.
La Grange has a few apartments near the Cossitt Avenue school that look kind of sketchy. Crime is very low in La Grange, however.
