One final question, I think. Based on my reading elsewhere on the boards, it looks like the ideal time to go out and look would be roughly 30 to 45 days before the move. I'm looking at an August 1 lease, so should I follow the conventional wisdom and book flights accordingly?

I would go with 45-60 but that is just me. I do not know if I would cut it really close with 30.
