I fear I'm played out in Chicago and the Chicago mfg companies don't want to hire me... I probably have 15 years of trying to get work in Chicago companies since living here from college graduation in Dec 1992. So now I guess I gotta do a nationwide jobhunt... Not all the best jobs are in Chicago and often better matching opportunities are out of state... I fear the only way I can live in Chicago is when I retire to inherit my Wicker Park house... Have to live in Apts in other states.

How has you Chicago jobhunt gone? How long have you been unemployed?

I've been unemployed 107 weeks now.

First of all, ignore Avengerfire, he/she/it gets off on being a forum troll/wannabe moderator.

Secondly, there just aren't exactly a lot of jobs available for what you're talking about, at least in terms relevant to the population. Employers are typically hiring younger engineers/designers who are generally easier to train and have lower salary requirements. Yes there are jobs, but in all reality there is just a ton of competition. It's as simple as that.

On top of that, you've been out of work for two years, and employers have a hard time getting over that. This isn't to say you're totally screwed, but it's going to be an uphill battle.

I fear I face age discrimination at 41. And I got hired in 1995 at Pentair after 4.5 years of unemployment.

First off, you are a newcomer that has no idea how many threads this guy has started with almost the exact same topic on this website. Sit down.

Yes, I am. Does it really matter though? He's unemployed and wants to talk about it. Who cares (aside from you)? Get off your high horse.

Well then maybe you won't have an issue with two years off. I obviously can't speak to your skills. Being 41 isn't really that old to be honest. If you have a good skillset you'll get hired. It's not like you're some old fart.

I can't search for my old threads. City Data has a bug in their old thread viewer and I can't find my old threads from my profile page.

It's particularly rough out there in IT, and someone with your, uh, colorful history is probably going to be one of the last to get re-hired after the economy finally picks up steam. I don't know that your problem is Chicago-specific, but even so in these "beggars can't be choosers" times it's long past time to look for jobs elsewhere besides Chicago. I've applied for jobs from Seattle to DC...

Fair enough. I can help-so I did. I was not dismissing you completely.

Based on my knowledge from past posts Jesse has some unique concerns, that I think most of us don't have the experience to help him with.
