Sure there are pretty areas, I think there are in most "bad" sections of the city if you just stop and look around.

I always use to drive out Washington/Madison/Jackson (I'd pick randomly to see how fast I could go) when the Ike was a parking lot, and I remember noticing on my occasions that there were some very well-kept and tree lined streets all around the West Side.

I think people throw that entire quadrant of the city into one bucket of "wasteland", without stopping to think there are numerous neighborhoods and hundreds of individual streets.

There are beautiful areas and beautiful people all over Chicago. I know it sounds cheesy, but some of the most inspiring people I have ever met are trying to change their neighborhoods. Little by little.

The West Side has beautiful housing stock, and was less bulldozed than the South Side during the "Urban Renewal" years. Austin and Garfield Park in particular could be stunning once again with some investment.

Austin had some very nice buildings----solid flat buildings and nice courtyards. And some very nice houses too around Lake and Central.

Jackson and Washington Blvds were especially attractive streets. Recently I took my wife over to Jackson Blvd near Laramie to show her where our old parish, Resurrection, used to be. The church is gone now. The neighborhood looked a little rough but not so much as I expected and it wasn't scary to drive there, not like north Lawndale which is pretty scary.

Man, when I took my wife over to see my Dad's old neighborhood at 22nd and Millard it was weird, she said let's get the Hell out of here. And she's a city girl who grew up in Philly and lived in Uptown for 15 years.
