Hi,

I'll be doing an internship in Chicago over the summer and I was wondering about permit parking. My car is registered in Indiana, so as I understand I need to get an Illinois license plate to get a permit, and that seems like a lot of trouble since I'll only be there 3 months.

Just wondering if anyone here knows how others in my situation usually handle this? Thanks!

I'm looking at a place near UIC which apparently only has permit parking nearby according to the owner...

You know, I thought that was the procedure for getting a city sticker and a permit. Being from Kansas, I registered my vehicle and got everything through the proper channels.

When I get home after all that I see that my neighbor, also from Kansas, got his sticker and permit but still has his Kansas plate to this day. I've seen other like this with Missouri plates, Indiana plates etc...

I can't say I know exactly, but my friend lives near Wrigley Field and there are a ton of cars from Iowa, Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota, etc. that have permits in their windows. I will do some research!

Taken from: Office of the Chicago City Clerk -- Residential Parking Information (http://www.chicityclerk.com/residential_parking/ - broken link), this is what you need to prove you live here and to get a permit:

Proof of Residency
To prove your residency in a particular zone a resident must bring in a photo ID, proof of purchase of a current Chicago vehicle sticker and one of the following:
• Mortgage or lease
• Water
• Tax bill
• Gas bill
• Light bill
• Phone bill (land line only, cell phones bills are not accepted)
• Satellite or Cable Television bill
So, it looks like you will have to get both a city sticker and a permit sticker for your car, and it REALLY sucks that you will be here for the summer, since they expire in June 30, so you will have to get a sticker for both for this year and a sticker for both for next year (since July 1, 2009 you are required to have a new city of chicago sticker and a new zone sticker). It will be a little bit of money, but it will be worth not having to hassle with changing the daily permit each and every day in your car.

Ask him to buy you a couple of books of guest passes every month. Give him the $8 per book of 15 (you can use one pass per 24 hour period) $16 bucks a month times 3 equals $48. Maybe buy the owner a lunch or something too.

This would be far cheaper in the short term than buying a city sticker and a parking permit sticker. As far as I know it is legal.

Depending on how long he will be here, maybe a daily permit would be the better way of going about it? I know that they just increased the rates for the daily permits, but if he has to buy separate city stickers to go along with that permit, would it be beneficial monetarily to buy the daily passes? Besides, I think that you can put a few daily passes in your car at a time. Again, just asking. I am not an expert on zoning permits by any means.

Hmm... what I plan to do is to have my car parked all day during weekdays and take the L to work, maybe only use the car on weekends or on certain nights. What'll be my best options in that case?

Leave the car in Indiana.
