I was going to put you on my "ignore list" since you contribute nothing intelligent or informative to any post, but neglected to do so. My mistake.

In that case I guess it was dream come true for the actors and should shut up those who believes that Broadway is only Cats and Jersey Boys.
Clearly you scored, usually you get B-way lefovers in form of "Broadway in Chicago" once in a while it is Chicago on Brodway. Even Atlanta had its day with Color of Purple which made it to B-way so this is nothing unusual. For you however it is the sole reason to boast Chicago as the best theater scene in the country

As far as ignoring me, be my guest, I am tired of your cry-baby defensive Midwestern attitude.

See if some other Chicago hater would be kind enough to lend you a clue. I can deal with people who dislike this city, but I'd request that they be informed, at least somewhat, in doing so.
There are many plays that find their way to B-way, from stages in other cities, usually London. Just don't get a cow about that single play from Chicago that made it into big leagues.

Just so you know dipstick-Chicago along with San Francisco proved and shaped the musical Wicked.

The Pre-Broadway run in Chicago was on Southport at the Mercury Theatre.

Well, B-way is the best scene on the planet and takes from wherever it can. It is not so easy to find material for 40 theaters, each over 500 seats plus many many more smaller and really small stages. Broadway does not discriminate based on geography or nationality. It just gets the best talent and best material wherever it can be found.
That's where greatness of New York lies: if it is great, you'll find it in the city sooner or later.

There's a reason for all those pre-Broadway premieres coming to Chicago. Between adventurous audiences and lower production costs, it's a perfect laboratory. Movin Out was tested here first, too, as well as, I think, Aida, the Producers and many others

However, I think it's plays like August and Urinetown (Tony nominee from a few years ago) and Metamorphoses (ditto) that are the real indicators.

I don't particularly care for musicals myself, but Steppenwolf and the Goodman typically have more serious plays--and the quality of acting is consistenly high.

By "serious" you mean straight plays (acting without any singing).

You would love my job. I get tons of invites to openings, cocktails with the cast, etc. I can never go, though, and I'm not really a theater person. I have one on my desk right now from the Goodman Theater for "The Crowd You're In With". Looks interesting.

I actually meant serious as in plays that deal with serious subject matter, instead of "What happened before Dorothy's house dropped in to Oz".
