Yeah well, I wasnt going to participate, but when people seriously say Chicago is as gray as Seattle, thats when I have to step in. Same goes for people who say Chicago is "truck and SUV country". LMFAO

Ridiculous.

So, tell me, what kind of Lexus SUV do you have (no research allowed sir)? Bottom line? SUVs are for people who are afraid of snow and have absolutely no driving skills whatsoever and want their vehicles to do the thinking for them. Weak.
Try street-parking in Chicago for a winter or two with 2WD and then let's see how smug you are about your driving skills.

Why be a smart a$$?

I lived out near Oregon, IL, where THEY DIDNT PLOW 1/2 THE ROADS until way late in the day and there were actually HILLS (big ones, too). I drove from there to Geneva frickin Illinois 4 days a week in a Toyota Paseo with a 1.75" drop and 205/40/17 Bridgestone Potenzas. Ever driven down a steep hill with no ABS (and summer/sport tires) DAILY? Ever see the snow drifts out in the countryside? Chicago would be a WALK IN THE PARK. Please.

You were saying?

I was saying: try street parking in Chicago with 2WD for a winter or two and see if you're still so smug about your winter driving skills. You have no idea what a complete pain in the ass it is unless you've lived through it. It's enough of a pain in the ass that people actually get into fistfights over "reserved" spots in winter. I had no idea what a complete pain in the ass it was either because for the first several years here in the city I had AWD cars. These last couple winters have been my first in the city with 2WD. I was this close to buying a Subaru this winter but I couldn't find one in the condition I wanted in my price range.

I NEVER stick up for Drover EVER, but on this one, the guy is right. Chicago plows are about as considerate as a NY cabbie in rush hour traffic. (heres how considerate they all are over there lol ah it was fun http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLsGP4ieFaU) Plows here are known to take the snow and almost purposely plow all the slush and slop right up against your car door of which at the time they plow it is usually the tail end of the storm so temps are hovering in the upper 20s to low 30s meaning the snow is still wet. Then comes the clearing line meaning temps will plummet down to the low 20s to upper teens meaning your once wet slush is now a two foot tall wall of ice right up against your car door. Have fun getting that sucker out of there along with continual cars driving right by on roads right out of the 1800s meaning they are narrow and there is no where to put the snow. Here is a typical Chicago neighborhood street have fun parrallel parking a little car low to the ground in this, not to mention add on about a foot of snow to what you see here as the day this video was taken the weather was rather pleasant.

More like your post just shows you're jelous that I can actually afford a Lexus LOL! And it's an AWD Lexus RX. Having driven over 20 years all over the country including all over the 5 bouroughs on a regular basis with some of the most aggressive drivers in the world and still accident free and ticket free? You're right I guess I'm a bad driver. Keep "Spewing your crap" Mr. Green with envy LOL!

Even so, I decided to put your hypothesis to the test. The closest weather records I could find that did not default to Chicago data were Wheeling for the near north and Joliet for the southern suburbs. And guess what I found? The mean temperature difference on Mother's Day between Wheeling and Joliet was .... *drumroll* .... one degree.
Drover do yourself a favor and just stop while you're ahead of yourself because you just proved what a complete fricking idiot you are. "Skokie isn't close to the lake" ? Its like 6 miles inland. OH WOW! Meanwhile I post stuff from Chicago's chief meterologist Tom Skilling stating that Lake effect can move as far inland is 40 miles. You're right Skokie won't be affected. LOL! Join Steve O in the know it all club. While you and Mr. Jelousy go on about how wonderful Chicago's weather is, perhaps WGN can fire Tom Skilling as he apparently has no idea what he is talking about, hire Drover who can now go on about how lake effect can't move inland more than a mile or two (nevermind Chicago is flat so cold air can just rush inland like nothing) and you both can read this little article writen by a meterologist NOT me How far inland does the lake breeze typically reach? - WGN Weather Center Blog and since I doubt either of you are meteorologists I would just stop while you are both ahead. Steve you live inland so I am not saying your weather is bad, it isn't great but not like the city's, you look out your window and say, "its not cloudy that much whats he talking about?" and Drover you are about 3 miles inland up in the Wicker Park area I think and you have said you go to college, I'm guessing in the city, so you don't go inland far enough on a regular basis to experience just how different the weather in the city is vs. the far southern or western burbs. I drive over 22,000 miles a year around the Chicago area so here's where the line seems to be (From St. Charles down to Joliet and Joliet to Kankakee over to Lowell then up around Bremen, IN and then shoot the line straight east from there and that area on the inside of that line on the lake side is affected by the lake on a regular basis while areas on the inland side are not as adversly affected.

Here's a little more for your viewing pleasure as to how far inland lake effect cooling is able to move when it wants to in the upper left corner. Rain combines with persistent lake winds to set up a raw, chilly Monday - WGN Weather Center Blog 12 degree difference between Joliet and Lincolnshire. Thats not that much, but still a good spread in an area only an hour away from eachother in good traffic. And Uhhh wow look at what town is right in the 40s while on the south side is near 60. SKOKIE! WOW who woulda thunk.

And here is why in the winter the lake is of no affect really what so ever so the theory of it being so much warmer here in the winter thanks to the lake is out the window as winds typically don't blow off the lake in the winter months. Again Tom? Have at it. Winds veer and cut time over lake so 60 degrees is possible inland Sunday - WGN Weather Center Blog
