Well, Drover... I've only owned 2WD vehicles here, and it's been a pain, but I've survived just fine. AWD is nice, but not absolutely essential.

This is the City of Chicago forum. The vast majority of Chicagoans live much closer than 6 miles from the lake. These things are relative. Compared to where most of us live, Skokie ISN'T close to the lake. So for that you call him an idiot? Come on.

I didn't say you were crazy for thinking it's cold. It's damn cold. Horribly cold. But it's not the coldest place in the midwest, and I really don't know how you can dispute that without some kind of mental illness to blame.

I've never owned a 4WD vehicle in my life. It simply isn't necessary unless you live in a hilly rural area that doesn't get plowed.

You're right its NOT neccessary but most things in life aren't. If you are about to go running on a nice sunny day is it neccessary to wear running shoes? Couldn't you run in snow boots if you had to? Sure. But wouldn't it be nice to have fancy zero impact running shoes vs the boots? Well the same goes for choosing what kind of car to buy when living in an area subjected to frequent crummy weather from Nov through April. I have a Nissan Altima too, but give me the SUV anyday on the crummy days anyday over the old Nissan. Could I drive the Nissan in the snow? sure, but why? Well same goes for choice of car for the area you live in. I just have the old Nissan cuz it's paid off and isn't worth a dime so may as well keep it. As for where to put the snow, there is nowhere to so I understand that, but I swear that the plows seem to wait for just when I get my car (the car not the suv) shoveled out when I'm visiting in the city to come by again. uggh lol

We've had two really snowy winters in a row. I would have liked a 4WD vehicle a few times last winter. But typically, there are only a few days out of the year that I feel 4WD would really help out. For me, it's not worth the extra cost and decreased fuel economy for a couple days out of the year.

Yes it is a Chicago forum and yes the weather all over the CITY of Chicago is the same for the most part usually, but whether everyone wants to admit it or not, Chicago would not be as great of a city as it is without its burbs tagging along side it; Skokie included. Chicago's burbs are what makes this city so incredible creating a mega scale city over 100 miles in length from the WI border down to Kankakee and over 40 miles wide from the Lake shore out to Aurora, thus creating numerous micro climates. The city itself really isn't that large, but it's the burbs that create a humongous metro area on a similar scale with NY or LA and with myself traveling ALL over this area on a regular basis I do lose track of the fact that this is a specific forum and not Chicagoland on a grand scale and do get to experience driving from the loop where it will be 45 and grey out to Aurora or Joliet where it only an hour later (in good traffic) will be near 70 under partly cloudy skies leaving me to be like, "WTF!"

The new vechicle's computers are able to compensate when AWD is neccessary or not unlike older cars where yes it was true that AWD greatly affected fuel economy. New cars are so advanced now that you may lose a mile per gallon but thats about it usually. No biggie to pay for all the added safety and comfort of knowing you have it.

Adding to NYrule's comments, I'm always amazed at how different the weather is in the south suburbs compared to my north lakefront residence. Especially once you get into places like Plainfield and Mokena. There can be wide swings in temperature. And for some reason, that south suburban area seems to take the brunt of most of the major storms that come through.

Sure, but you can't buy a Honda Civic or Toyota Prius 4WD. So there's also the TYPE of car that's available... And these types of cars aren't usually among the most fuel efficient.

Nobody said any different, and that has nothing to do with what I said. I just said that, as this is a City of Chicago forum, to say that Skokie isn't that far from the lake (and to call someone stupid for not recognizing that) ignores the fact that compared to the vast majority of the city... the area this forum is all about... Skokie IS far from the lake.
