You know they're desperate when they're renting out beautiful brand new condos without so much as a security deposit!

I look at the "West Loop" and "South Loop" like the character Dwight from The Office. He always said he was the "Assistant Regional Manager", while his boss insisted that he was "Assistant TO the Regional Manager". Similarly, the "West Loop" should be called "West OF the Loop"--and the "South Loop" should be caled "South OF the Loop". I mean, why isn't the "South Loop" actually the southern part of the Loop? It makes no sense.

personally I won't go anywhere further than Ashland in west loop. if you have a car, try driving on madison from halsted all the way to the west past Western. You'll see the different as you go further west.

Very true, I've often thought the REAL south Loop was between Adams and Van Buren.
We could go back to the old days when people often called their neighborhood by parish or the closest big corner. So I live in old St. Mary's. Or by 12th Street and Michigan. When I was born we lived by Jackson and Kedzie, then we moved to Resurrection, then Austin and Madison.
So where do you live Lookout, St. Thomas of Canterbury?

St. Mary of the Lake. It's just south of St. Helen of the Slums.

1. From the WLCO (West Loop Community Organization) website:
"The West Loop neighborhood is bound by Ashland Avenue on the west, the Chicago River on the east, Grand Avenue on the north and the Eisenhower Expressway on the south."
Personally, I suspect extending the West Loop's borders into West Town (Grand) is a bit of a stretch, but since I don't live there I would defer any such judgment to those who do.
2. It is one of the safer areas in the city, comparable to the better North Side neighborhoods.
3. If you like midrise aparment lofts (not to be confused with artist lofts) and you want to live downtown, West Loop the place to be. WLCO has fought long and hard to keep the place from getting bulldozed for high rises ala South Loop. If you are looking for vintage walkups, look elsewhere.

pffft. community organizations have long been guilty of expanding their own borders to inflate their own importance.
best example are the "Wrightwood Neighbors" who, through some careful marketing/courting of developers and realtors, have convinced people they are a chunk of LP the size of the DePaul campus.
"not," sez I.
same with Hamlin Park - the "Hamlin Park Association" paid for banners with their name up and down Western, but that don't make it Hamlin Park - to get to Tom's point, Lane Tech is the driving force of that stretch, by far.

It's just a matter of time before Buena Park Neighbors takes over that quiet, unknown neighborhood to the south... Lake View.

I would also be St. Mary of the Lake although I live in Lake View. So I live just south of St. Helen of the Slums and north of St. Harry of the Bleacher Bums.
