In my opinion it's only offensive if you think being black is a bad thing. I don't so I say it freely. I've been beaten over the head for years though for casual references to race which others claim are adventitious to the crux of the story I'm telling. I'm retired from debating these issues, though. I'm busy enough with work and taking care of the kids.
