I'm a clueless blue collar liberal, born and raised in Chicago and I voted for Obama and believe we should all love each other.
What's wrong with people moving here from Michigan and Iowa? What, it's only OK if you move here from Kiltimagh or Lodz? Man, this city needs new blood, all cities do. Some old and some new, that makes a city interesting.

I'm tired of that argument. I'll take a good bar and a good coffee shop over a sucky one any day. If it can be unique to the neighborhood and locally owned, all the better. If the choice is between chain and nothing at all or complete suckitude, give me the chain. I heard this bs in Hyde Park for too long. Locally owned blah blah. Just give me a place to get a good drink.

If he had bothered to actually try to construct a coherent thought, I might have been able to detect a point, valid or otherwise. All I saw was a non-punctuated block of text that, I think, was supposed to be a rant about something or other.

Straight from my brother-in-law, in response to a similar complaint in a similar conversation on city-data two years ago:

Hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland got paved over and replaced with strip malls. Your city has exported drugs, gangs and violence all over the Midwest to cities big and small like Milwaukee, the Twin Cities, Decatur, Springfield, Indianapolis, and so forth. Your criminals get sent to our jails downstate and their hoochie-mamas move down here to be closer to them and bring their 7 maladjusted sociopathic kids with them who then turn our neighborhoods and our schools upside down. Your rich millionaire doctors and lawyers and bankers buy up property all over Wisconsin and Michigan only to leave it sitting vacant 10 months out of the year while locals get pushed out because they can't afford to live where their families have been for generations. And now you want to complain that people come from other states and turn run-down mom and pop stores into coffee shops? Get a clue.

Short version: what goes around, comes around. Chicago has always interacted with the region around it, has changed it, and has been changed by it. This is nothing new.
