The southside land mass is the size of Detroit or Philly and stretch all the way to 136th St. By that alone, I can't imagine even half of the southside becoming gentrified.
Most of the gentrification on the southside is happening between the South Loop and Hyde Park(already gentrified). I'm sure many so called yuppies and hipsters aren't willing to go further south than that.

i wouldnt be surpised if yuppies move into south shore, at least in the high rises on s. shore drive (there's already some there from the looks of it but not alot). But yea some places on the s.side really could benefit from gentrification

There is a starbucks in South Shore. I'm surprise with the violent crime in South shore. The area by the country club look well kept with some large homes. It can be a spot for black yuppies, but I think Kenwood/Hyde Park currently have that title.

The greatest thing that could ever happen to South Shore is to have some yuppies move in. People have been waiting for this for 25 years. Hasn't really happened to any great extent (other than the ones already in the Highlands), and people now who want more affordable lakeside living are looking more at new developments North Kenwood/Oakland. Those who want to be very close to the University are moving into woodlawn.

I heard there is some gentrification in Bridgeport. I 'd rather see gentrification happening on the south side instead of that evil cancer known as white and/or middle class flight and the area being overran by filthy thugs, gangstas and scumbag criminals of any ethnic origin. I hope the south side can turn itself around.

Wash Park is a different world entirely. I believe it will gentrify. It is a dying ghetto. I've been driving through there for 25 years and it is a shell of its former self. Almost everything/everybody is gone. It has more the feel of an abandoned area than the poor, rough area it used to be. This is usually followed by development. If Chicago gets the olympics it will be sooner, but either way it will happen.

I don't think there are enough Yuppies to fill in all the areas that people hope will fill with them.
Now if we can attact all the skilled, high paid blue collar people who live in the burbs but have roots in the city back to it we could have something going. And more "diversity" too.
