How is the area between East Garfield Park and United Center?
Hi everyone, I'm a 21 year old Asian male and I'm considering living in an apartment which is sort of between East Garfield Park and United Center. The exact location is on W Madison Street, between N Talman Ave and N Western Ave.
I'm from out of Chicago, so I was trying to get an idea of what kind of area it is? Is it safe, I want to make sure I don't get mugged, assaulted or shot, etc. I'd love to hear from people who live in the area.

I read the post, but I would like to know about the area more towards downtown, and how it would be specifically for an asian male? Thanks!

I think that would technically put you in the west edge of West Town as opposed to East Garfield Park. In either case, you'd be about the only Asian male in the immediate vicinity. The area around Madison/Western is not an area where you should expect to get instantly mugged/shot/whatever, but it's more likely to happen there than in some parts of the city; and less likely than in others. It wouldn't be my first choice of places to live, but I wouldn't be in constant fear for my safety if I had to live there. (I still wouldn't spend a lot of time walking around at night around there.)
If you haven't fine-tuned your tolerance for urban conditions or if your tolerance is on the lower end, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. And to that end, is there a specific reason you're looking at this area? If not, what are your criteria for a neighborhood, what is your budget, et cetera?

I think Drover is bit more optimistic than I would be, if you were local already I might feel differently.
Madison and Western is cheap for a reason -- that is not a desirable area of the City.

Man that is a weird streetscape, with spanking new townhouses in a shattered, forgotten area of the Near West Side.
