I think the natives of PHX hate anyone from the Midwest since we have taken over the valley of the sun. Their are cubs fans and bears fans all over PHX and even Packer bars. It seems the Midwest has called PHX it's vacation spot much like New York has claimed South Florida.

In the next few decades people will really realize that is what it is. Wait until the the water gets cut down drastically out there. People are going to die in the thousands.
Again ignorance. Phoenix is using LESS water now then they were in the past.

Gordon reminisces about his aquatic youth, telling me that central Phoenix was once a hotbed for citrus growers because the water was so plentiful. But that was decades ago, before the population exploded to more than 3.5 million residents, all thirsty, all washing laundry, and all wanting things like pools and golf courses and vegetables. Folks like Washington Post columnist Neal Peirce talk of imminent disaster: Arizona might run out of water and dry up like the desert surrounding its capital city.

Gordon shakes his head. "Phoenix is using less water today than we were a decade ago and less per capita than we were two decades ago," he says. He recognizes that the huge growth in his city did strain the infrastructure, however — pushing out agriculture, causing low water pressure, and forcing city officials to retrofit homes and buildings with conservation mechanisms.

So how could it be possible that a million additional people use less water than their late-'90s predecessors? Can the "mellow yellow" flushing mantra, requests to only do laundry at night and demands for "xeriscaping" really make that much of a difference? Evidently, yes.

According to the city's Water Resource Plan, individual and business conservation efforts made for a 20 percent reduction in water use since 1980

As cities in other parts of the West struggle to conserve water in the face of a drought that has been gripping the region for years, Phoenix is going about business as usual.
Not only are there no mandatory water restrictions, but some people who let their lawns die from lack of watering are ticketed. Some homeowners associations are requiring lawns even to be kept up during winter, said Dallas Reigle, senior hydrologist with the Salt River Project, one of the city's water suppliers.
``The irony is that a city in the desert in the middle of one of the meanest droughts we have ever had is telling a citizen he has to water his land,'' Reigle said.
Phoenix isn't as vulnerable as some cities to running out of water because multiple sources supply the metropolitan area of about 3 million people: Water is pulled from the Colorado, Salt and Verde rivers, and groundwater is pumped from wells.
Even with the summer heat fading, much of the West -- southwestern Colorado, most of Utah, western Montana, western Wyoming and parts of New Mexico -- is still stuck in an extreme drought, according to the National Drought Mitigation Center in Lincoln, Neb.

It's possible to afford such luxuries because water is cheaper here than in many other places, said Jeff DeWitt, the city's assistant financial director. On average, single-family households in the city use 11,200 gallons per month at a cost of about $19.64, before taxes and fees are added.
Nationwide, single-family households on average use 11,220 gallons per month at a cost of about $25.05, before taxes and fees are added.

Thats right. And you do not hear about thousands of people being attacked by wild cats and snakes and car sized mites in Phoenix (as some claim on here).

You mean the Milwaukee or Chicago of the west.

Again, we have taken over the valley of the sun??? Do you live in Milwaukee or not? Do you not see the fake arrogance and inferiority complex shining through in a remark like that? Also, there are Cubs pukes and Packers bars all over America oh dim one.

Here are the crime statistics for Phoenix and Chicago.

Rates are based on cases per 100,000 for all of calendar 2007.

Murder and nonnegligent manslaughter

PHX-14 Chicago-16

Forcible rape

PHX-35 Chicago-N/A

Robbery

PHX-321 Chicago-546

Aggravated assault

PHX-356 Chicago-617

Property crime

PHX-5,826 Chicago-4,472

Burglary

PHX-1246 Chicago-876

Larceny-theft

PHX-3227 Chicago-2937

I want to point out that many things like Violent crime and forcible rape Chicago has NA for reports to the FBI. Anyone remember CBS2 doing a report on Chicago Police making false reports on murders and calling them SUICIDES? Chicago does what it can to make the crime either not available or screw with the data.

Phoenix is not perfect like I have said several times. But its a government that works for the people. I will give two examples. Mayor Gordon took heat because even though the city of phoenix was cracking down on illegal immigrants the citizens wanted a special order by the police to end dealing with illegal immigrants. A elected official in PHX can be recalled ANY time as in the County of Maricopa and the State of Arizona.

The people became angry and he changed and Phoenix took a even more aggressive approach to illegal immigration. BTW Chicago is ranked 2nd in the nation for illegal immigrants. As pointed out we do not even check when we put people in prison if they are legal or not. Statistics showed that illegal immigrants are leaving PHX because they know they are not welcome.

My aunt and uncle moved from Chicago (hyde park) when they were in their 30s and my uncle took a job in a Phoenix headquartered company (petsmart).

PHX is the largest capital in the nation larger then Atlanta, Nashville, DC, Denver. The capital actually governs their State unlike IL. They have always been for the right of citizens to have guns. A city in Arizona I believe it was Tuscon was looking for gun control measures and when the Capital in Phoenix heard about it then passed a law that no local government can make a law regarding gun control.

Springfield is too corrupt and too much of wimps to actually govern Illinois. The corruption, spending, ignorance goes further then Chicago but all the way to the capital of this State. It will not end until the people demand more and some of you are proof you like it the way it is. Dont complain then.

If someone breaks in my house I want to be able to blow their brains out and not have to answer why I did it. In PHX I will not. In liberal Chicago the question will be "why did you have a gun"?

"north of Phoenix"--Again I have stated you take a risk when you go in Cook County forest preserve too. There are wolves and there have been sightings of cougars. Does it happen in Arizona more then Illinois? Yea. If you want to get real technical dog attacks are much more common Chicago then Phx too. Sssssooo you are saying what? Dont leave your house in Chicago because you might get attacked by a pitbull? Cougar attacks are rare down there (and I have no doubt they will become more rare as humans continue to kill the wild cats down there just as they did here).

Its not common and you can not live your life in fear. The sonoran desert is the most awesome desert in the world. Tons of wildlife and great landscape unlike any other. You live in Chicago. Surely if you can become friends with flying bullets, gangs, pitbull attacks and the mob you surely can deal with the rare mountain lion.

Some words to chew on:

"Heat Waves Getting Worse"

"...One example: From mid July to early August 2006, a heat wave swept through the southwestern United States. Temperature records were broken at many locations and unusually high humidity levels were recorded....

...Why it matters: Other studies show heat waves are deadlier than hurricanes or tornadoes, and they have been so throughout modern history. Climate experts have warned that the sort of serious heat wave that is now possible given current climate conditions, but which has not struck yet, could kill thousands of U.S. residents...

...There's been no letup in the Southwest this year. In Phoenix, this July was the hottest on record, with the average of all highs and lows for the month being 98.3 degrees. One reason, meteorologists said: Overnight lows were much warmer than normal..."
