Mayor Daley said it himself, this is a lunch bucket town. Metrosexuals need not apply.
One of the things that have always bothered me about Chicago it's is racism. This forum is proof of it, majority of the threads on here end with some racist rant. The racial segregation is also something of an eyesore.
So Chicago may not be as sophisticated as other world cities, but it is more down to earth, you can't take that away from us.

Agreed. Except I think Chicago does have it fair share of yuppies and tight pants wearing guys. Even though Chicago is consider liberal, not that socially like San Fran and NYC. If people was truly social liberal, Chicago would be more integrated than it is now

LOL, i know, princess does the whole passive agressive statements about people not commenting like they were suppose to (maybe we don't agree with you?) and then states how it was never the intention to put anyone down for living here or be put down himself.
It's pretencious.

1. Passive-aggressive. Don't confuse small pleasantries with friendliness or kindness. People in the Mid-West are bred not to be direct, it is considered rude there. They are raised to be "nicey-nice". They don't actually want to know you or how you're doing or what you're doing. It is just a formality to smile all the time, guffaw and talk nonsense at all times. I have NEVER met such back stabbing, nasty, two-faced liars in all my life! They aren't "nice" at all.
2. People are thugs-they really are! I happen to look young for my age, I dress well and for a guy, I guess I fall into the handsome, classic good looks category. This really bothered people in Chicago, where most guys are fat, balding and dress like ****. I had people shoulder-check me on the street (men AND women), in bars and come up to me and say, "**** you!" for no reason. People seemed to be really angry and looking to start fights. I mean the city itself is run by criminals. Oh, and by the way, be off the streets after the Cubs lose. Especially if you're gay or non-white. It will be taken out on you.

I can see where you come from in points 1 and 2, but honestly I think the problems are more a personal one than everyone else just sucks. Midwest people are more closed than others, but I moved here not knowing a soul in 2001 and within a few years had multiple lifelong friends. You just need to develop friendships and people will swing the doors open for life. If you didn't I don't know why, but it's not something anyone here can help you with - it's a case by case study. Same with the thug thing, I dress nice, am a gay male and have never had any issues.
Lots of these things are dependant on how people carry themselves and come off and act, and your comments are how you're interpreting things based on how you present yourself to the world.
I mean seriously - people walk down the street shoulder-checking you and walking up to you screaming **** You in bars for no reason???
I moved here in 2001 liking the city, and within 3 years realized I never wanted to live anywhere else. The corruption, crime and weather aren't things to boast about, but there are 100 other things about this city I absolutely live and love every day.

Yes, but I can only imagine what mediocre hole you came from. By comparison, I'm sure Chicago is swell.

At least you proved me wrong on the pretenciousness!!!!!
This is actually my favorite one you see from people. They aren't impressed with the city, so ergo if you came from somewhere smaller than Chicago (aka, not New York or the West Coast), you're obviously too fragile and stupid to realize what you're dealing with as far the real world. Jee wiz, mama! All dem lights sure is amazing, aint it, never got nothin like that back in St. Olaf!!!
Well I've spent 8 years traveling around 3 continents and 27 countries, all 50 states and more than enough time on the West and East coasts. Not saying that to sound stuffy like some people, just stating that because I grew up in IOWA (I bet you love that!!) in a happy family who might like to get away to Europe for a few weeks a year - but is always more happy to be back in Iowa City - doesn't mean someone is less than you are. It tends to come off as quite the opposite in many cases.

60614: Unfortunately you can't read tone here, but you sort of deserved that. Rather than the personal attacks, why can't anyone just move on to a new thread if they don't like what I have to say about my experience. Ok, you wouldn't want to hang out with me and Chicagosox threatened to do bodily harm if I were still in the city. I get it. I understand, but if you would rationally think, for a moment, that perhaps I am doing a bit of research to get opinions about those who struggle to like Chicago. Those are the stories I am looking for. Not what city could be worse. Not that I suck because you assume I'm a hipster, which I'm not and is passe anyway... Please do share your stories and the reasons you don't like Chicago. That is all I am interested in hearing. No need to get hurt feelings because I don't like your city. I know it is a very sensitive subject because of the deep inferiority complex that Chicagoans have about their city.
