And my Dad was a white collar guy, the 50s version of a yuppie I reckon. But he grew up on the West Side too.....

My 2 sons got along fine with Black and Mexican kids, hung around with some and shot dice at school. But everyone knew the kids were willing to scrap too. And nobody bothered their sisters, nobody.

Very good points about my son, just nervous! I generally do not believe in children playing outside by themselves wherever you may live. Too many things going on in this world! It's a fine line trying to decide what is sheltering and what is putting your child in the way of danger. I thank everyone so much for their help. I did search the crime site and it appears more crimes where I live now then the new area! I never hear or see of anything, seems pretty quiet where I am now and I love it.

of course, I would just suggest, wherever you end up, you spend time outside in front of your house with your son.

if people would just peel themselves away from the TV and go outside they'd find that the neighborhood riff-raff would act a whole lot differently. when kids don't think they're being watched, that's when trouble starts.

I think the kid changes things a lot. I would not live in that area with a young child. Why don't you look closer to the Logan Square station or even the areas of Avondale by the Belmont stop? Avondale maybe have worse crime stats overall but the area in the 3 block vicinity of the station are considerably better than west of Kimball in LS.

I'm 2 blocks from the Belmont stop, and it's fine. yes, we at times have some gang tagging problems, but people call them in and they are gone quickly.

the key is that the closest school is an elementary and middle school one, not some completely insane high school scene where 17 - 20 year olds hang out every afternoon, bored and restless.

i used to live by st louis and belden, that area belongs to the Imperial Gangsters that area is called Devil Side. The IG's are mainly a hispanic gang but they do have also have white members in them a few years ago the IG's were putting some pressure on my friends to join their gang when my friends were in their teens and they were white and hispanic

Maybe that's how it all worked out in the 50s. Today's little toughnecks can't be bothered with fisticuffs so they carry knives and guns. And even if you scrap with someone who isn't packin', you never know what their affiliation is and who they'll bring around the next time they see you and what their friends will be armed with. In a lot of neighborhoods your options are as follows: lay low and stay out of peoples' business, or affiliate so that you're one of several targets instead of a lone target. Thankfully, in most Hispanic neighborhoods laying low and staying out of peoples' business is easier if you're white.
