Note that the former "black belt", including much of Bronzeville and the location of the former projects along State Street, are nowhere to be found on this list. Nothing north of Garfield Boulevard (roughly 55th Street) is even mentioned. That's a major transformation, via wrecking crew.

I typed this uber long response to the OPs list a few minutes ago and CD froze and deleted my entry but it went along these lines a bit.
I was on 53rd and Wallace (well, Halsted) yesterday and if I didn't know better I would have had no idea that only a few blocks to the south there was a totally different world. From 43rd south is certainly gritty but I think that somehow the industry in the area has shielded it to the bedlam going on south of 55th.

I was looking at the neigborhood in Chicago that's ranked #2. It's actually just a 4 block by 1 block plot of open land that use to hold housing projects.
There are a handful of houses in the very southern part of this area. I wonder if that's why the crime rates are so high here, the population is almost zero, but obviously people still wander through the area, and it's been a high-crime place for decades.

55th and State isn't so bad. I've taken that walk from the red line a few times recently. The area is getting more empty every year. Maybe 10 years ago but now there are far worse areas.

The question is, where are they moving to?

Where did they come up for the definitions of these neighborhoods?

I could think of many more Detroit neighborhoods that would make that list, although the whole mt. elliot corridor is pretty bad (I was once chased by a group of 'locals' when I used to have to drive parts to the heat treating plant that was down there)...
As for Chicago, surprised there's no west-side neighborhoods in there.... And where is Gary, IND??

I'm surprised that the worst neighborhood in the country is in Cicinnati!

That is the question. Everyone seems to know the answer except me. I have absolutely no clue. Never talked to one of those people. I will say though that what once was a bustling ghetto now is a shell of its former self. A pasty UofC nerd has a good chance of making it all the way from the red line to campus without so much as a smack in the head.
