Aw come on. The guy is an institution. We have to give him leeway out of respect for that fact. 
Besides, the Chicago forum mods are the best around.  They allow adequate room for the inevitable give-and-take that happens on a forum and they only intervene when doing so is necessary to restore and/or maintain order. Some mods around here are infuriatingly trigger-happy; others are asleep at the wheel. But the Chicago mods will let stuff heat up and will only throw water on the fire when it threatens to burn down the house.
Besides, we like Avengerfire even if he wouldn't last 2 weeks in some of the other forums around here.  He dishes out keen insight in his own unyieldingly curmudgeonly way. He's like the John Cass of the Chicago C-D forum. |

Lived in both places (currently in Chicago). Both are expensive. They are so different I think they are very hard to compare. At the end of the day, I'll give it to SD as a better place for me. Both are great. But its really not that simple. When I was there, I lived near the beach in nice neighborhoods. If I can speculate from the OP, if you would be working on the border and making less than 50k, SD would be very hard to enjoy--you would likely be living in da hood or so far east it would feel more like New Mexico.
