At the intersection of 18th and Michigan, you're at least 6-7 blocks from a train stop. Sure, the area is well covered by buses, but I wouldn't want to have to catch a bus to the el every morning to get to work.

Not that much farther, two blocks. You gotta keep in mind that the grid spacing is different between Madison and 31st St, between Roosevelt (12th St.) and Cermak (22nd St.) there are 10 "hundreds" to the mile rather than the normal 8. And from Madison to Roosevelt is 12 "hundreds" to the mile. So a guy at 18th St. only a mile and a half walk north to get in the Loop.

There's also a Red line stop at Cermak and Clark and it's 2 blocks (not 4 as one might suppose) from 18th to Cermak. Problem there is it's kind'a sketchy at Cermak and State. But hey, for people who like the city for "edge"......

Anyway I respect your preference for the El over the bus but a half mile walk to the El doesn't make a neighborhood remote. When I was a kid in Austin I could walk a half mile to the Lake St. El or a half mile to the Congress El. I didn't feel remote at all.

Regards

Which makes it great for renters. I'm getting such a deal.

My best friend's daughter asked why we didn't buy, I replied I'm tired of owning. She then asked what happens at the end. I said "Dear, at my age the end is The End."

Dearborn homes on 28th & State are being remodel. So far they changed the apartment windows and the entry doors look like a hotel.

I guess I will ask again my question, I did some research on this it seems there are some complaints from people living on 2000 S Michigan regarding some residence in long grove house and 2101 S Michicgan.People are saying those are not public houses and just are some subsidized apartment, but the management seem to get worse in last 5 years in the building.

Any one familiar with that area, I am interested buying or rent on 18th and Michigan & Indiana, there are many townhomes and condos and many townhomes cost 800k, just from the price I guess there won't be any big issue living with people in the old buildings?

Of course, I could just be spoiled because of where I am now, just a block from the Damen stop. I hate my apartment and want to move so badly, but I don't want to give it up just for it's proximity to the train.
He mentioned the building is at 20th, which puts him within easy striking distance of the Cermak stop. There's also the State Street bus, the Michigan Avenus bus, and MLK bue nearby. It's a short ride up to downtown on any of those. I'd say it's pretty well served.

TO be the only one to answer your question, I live just southwest of here for years now, and I walk by those buildings on Michigan all the time to catch the 3, 4 or 1 bus to go downtown. They are low income rental housing. The Hilliard Homes on State and Cullerton are now also subsidized and mixed-income (they used to be projects). None are bad or worrisome in the slightest, but if you are in the city always watch your back anyways.

Whoever is complaining are probably stuck up yuppies. Those buildings were there long before they moved in. They are not even 'bad', and they are definitely not the projects. Few crimes are reported, save a pizza delivery robbery, but thats very sporadic.

Ive rarely, if ever, read about any shootings or stabbings in those buildings. The only type of violence like that in the area happens near the Ickes between Cermak and 24th on State, and even that is rare. Aside from that, at the Legends club on wabash, there was a shooting death late last year, but thats the last one I can even think of - and that club closed down.

Basically the area is an up-and-coming neighborhood and considered part of the greater south loop. Even with the condo downslide, it will be full in the next 5-10 years with buyers or renters, with new restaurants and stores still opening. It has great access to downtown, great diversity in race and income, and the chicken place on cermak is real good. Nice access to chinatown and lakefront as well.

If you are scared of low-income black people, which you may be implying, there is far more farther south past the I55, but maybe this area isnt for you. And remember, these buildings were there first, so dont be an ass and expect everyone to conform to you just because you move there (not saying you are). Plus if thats your issue, maybe you should move to east lakeview or lincoln park - there are no blacks or hispanics, or people of any color really, up there except asians, and it has no flavor in my opinion. Good luck.

Just in case you do consider somewhere in Lincoln Park and wonder what those buildings are.I know personally that there is a scattered site(one single CHA building as opposed to a large project)in Lincoln Park. It's on North Ave and Sedgewick. There is also another larger hi-rise(low-income) a little farther east on North Ave.I haven't frequented this way in a minute, but they most likely are still there.
