As I map out apartments and hope to finalize an apartment this week, I find myself wondering, how far is too far to walk in chicago winters? I mean I would guess that walking two blocks on icy sidewalks is okay, but is it? What about grocery shopping? Same thing I would expect.

It all comes down to personal comfort. I wouldn't want to be more then 5 or 6 blocks from the El but now that Bus Tracker has fine tuned out a lot of its issues and they have added all (at this point i think?) routes it wouldn't so bad to have to take the bus to the El if you were within a couple blocks of the bus stop.

It really depends on how much cold you can handle. I have about a 6 or 7 block walk each way every day and it does suck, but there is not much you can do about it. In the winter time I dont mess around cuz I hate the cold. Im not the guy that walks into the office with his hair still combed perfectly and just a nice jacket. Im the guy that walks in with his hair a mess after wearing a hat and I take up 3 jacket hooks. Remember you will also have to wait for x amount for the bus/train

Buy a pair of these (http://www.yaktrax.com/ProductsWalker.aspx - broken link) and you'll wonder why you ever worried about a 2-block walk.

City ordinance requires property owners to clear the sidewalks within 24 hours after a snow. Some are lazy bums and don't bother and unfortunately the city is very lax about enforcement, but most people do keep the sidewalks cleared.

I think you've unintentionally sold me on these. Are they stretchy so that they can fit such a wide spread in sizing? And easy enough to move from one pair of boots to another?

I would say a mile is too far for most people.

They are stretchy and made of rubber (except the steel coils), but they're not quite "one-size-fits-all." They come in four different sizes, so if you have tiny feet and your SO has big ol' clown feet, or vice-versa, don't expect to share a pair. They have a shoe size chart here (http://www.yaktrax.com/ProductsWalker3.aspx - broken link) to help you pick your size. And these size charts take into consideration that winter shoes/boots have larger exteriors than your average loafers or pumps.

If they are made in the U.S.A. I will buy a pair. But what are the chances that they are?
