Default Good Neighborhood for a Single, Older woman

My husband and I are talking about moving to the Chicago area and there's a good chance my mother will tag along. We would prefer (all of us) to not actually live together.

I don't know much about the city so I'm looking for a good neighborhood for a 60 something year old, single, Puerto Rican woman on a fixed income. She does not drive and I'm trying to find a place where I will feel she is relatively safe. Any suggestions?

Logan Square and Humboldt Park both have good sized Puerto Rican populations. With Humboldt Park you should stay north of Augusta and east of California if at all possible both for safety concerns and proximity to the El(evated train). Rent prices do get much cheaper as you head west of Kedzie though and if that's more appropriate for your budget I would live in an apartment on one of the busier roads.

Logan Square is more expensive but still not too bad. It is a safer neighborhood with a greater white and Mexican population. The white areas are those that hug Milwaukee and west to just after Palmer Square. The further west you go it becomes more hispanic. The same safety rules apply here. The closer you are to the El and the "Boulevards" the safer the area.

There are a ton more neigborhoods that would work for you but without a little more info on your favorite hobbies, the kind of restaurants and amenities and walkability you are looking for in a neighborhood I cannot give any further suggestions.

Not sure what your reasoning is for not wanting to live with your husband and mother but if you wanted to consider it, it isn't too hard to find duplex-downs or 2 flats that have access to a mother-in-law suite in the basement level. You'd certainly save some money finding a 3/2 that fits your needs as opposed to 3 1-bedroom apartments.

I wouldn't be completely opposed to a duplex or access to a mother in law suite so long as we had separate kitchens and living areas... basically so long as we technically live apart.

The other issue is that we were talking about moving outside of the city but so long as there is easy access to public transportation that would be fine... or if it's affordable with some land surrounding it.

My mom likes to walk around, go to museums, flea markets... she doesn't have much money so free entertainment is her thing these days.
