Commute from Lakeview to University of Chicago Med Center?
How would the commute be from Lakeview to Univ of Chicago on the south side? It appears I would have to take I-90/94 S into the city and keep going out of the city.

Why wouldn't you take Lake Shore Drive if driving?

Huh? Do you mean "around downtown" becuase neither palce is outside of the City limits and it would impossible to actually leave Chicago on such a commute...
Lakeview is one of the largest of Chicago's neighborhoods and you can take LSD or other major surface streets from it to the UofC area without using the Kennedy / Dan Ryan. Driving times are going to be high dependant on EXACTLY where you start, WHEN you try to pass through the central core of Chicago and day-to-day events from Cubs games to Grant Park festivals to traffic incidents. Figure about 30 minutes on good days. from: N Racine Ave to: 5841 South Maryland, Chicago, IL 60637 (University of Chicago Hospitals) - Google Maps
Further the El is an option from most parts of Lakeview, though depending of work schedule service to UofC might make for a long ride. Bus service form the Loop to UofC is a viable option too. Figure about 3x as long as driving yourself:

Best idea is to drive and take lake shore. I agree 25-30 minutes would be good. Could take much longer at peak driving times or on nice weekend days. Once you get south of Roosevelt on LSD traffic disappears pretty much always.
A few people I know take the red line (depending on exactly where you live) to garfield. It is easier than it used to be since the university runs an express bus that makes a ten minute loop. Add to that the 55 and 55x and the wait on 55th is pretty minimal. It's an ugly place to get off, though, and at the wrong time you could run into some troublemakers (a band of twelve year olds assaulted some UofC students on both friday and saturday night at that stop). Rush hour it's probably pretty safe but still ugly.

There's the Metra/S.Shore stop down there, but that would involve transferring. That would avoid driving thru the Loop, and the hassles with it.

I would say I would be passing through the central core around 6:30 am. I am not too famillar with Chicago, so the Lakeshore actualy sounds like a decdent option.
I went to the Chicago Transit Authority website and it would take 55 min to get from Lakeview to the UC stop, so that is not an option.
Thanks for your help everyone. My wife has an interview at UC medical center and i just wanted to see how long it would be from the more desirable areas of the city.

From Lakeview you can take the Metra Redline to the Green line transfer at... oh, what is it... State and Lake to Randolph/Wabash, and that drops you off just west of Washington Park at Garfield. You can walk through the park to get to the medical center
Jesus. After not living in Chicago for a few years, I can't believe I ever understood the Metra and the CTA. Could they be any more freaking confusing? Who the hell decided that colors were better than some fudging numbers?

Oh, as a student I had to do far worse. I remember days working downtown as a summer associate... The stories I have to tell
It's been several years, gimme a break. I forgot how much transit in Chicago sucks. Hasn't it gotten better at all?
