Is Near West Side Safe?
Our daughter is transferring to UIC this fall and is looking to rent in the Automatic Lofts building at 410 S. Morgan St. Can you tell us if that area and areas to the north and east are safe these days? It appears there's gentrification going on, but just wanted to make sure before she signs any leases. What about walking south to the UIC campus from there? Thanks a lot.

It's fine.
But once in a while there's creeps that hang out around areas with students.

When I graduated from UIC about 3 years ago, I knew a few people who lived in that area. The area is fine. Not a bad walk from campus. I know people who lived further and they never minded too much. The area to the east is mainly just Greektown and many newer loft and condo buildings. The area to the North is pretty much the same. The area is not bad. There is always a story or two once in a while of a student being confronted by someone in the area but the area is nothing I ever worried about. Especially during the school year, there are a lot more people around the area.
Any other UIC questions feel free to ask

Is Near West Side Safe?
Thanks a lot for the feedback. We are going in tomorrow to look at apartments and walk around the area to get a feel for it. But it's always better to get the views of people who have lived in the city for awhile. Appreciate your help.

I seem to recall that the pedestrian bridge was no shoveled in the winter and that was a point of contention with residents, but other than that I agree with all of the above.

They rarely shoveled the sidewalks on the non-pedestrian bridges over the Kennedy from the Loop the last two winters... when the sloped part froze over it made for interesting travel .. That's part of our near-tundra experience. if that's the only thing one needs to worry about in a community, it's in pretty good shape ..
