Have you noticed recently that Chicagoans have become ruder and ruder? (Calumet City: layoffs, living)

ok. today I was walking on Wrightwood, and a few guys were trying to get a cab, and this cab drove by, driver screaming, "go get another fr**king ride." Those guys were like, "god damn russian cab driver!!!" fist in the air. I was truly amazed. Happened on the corner of Racine and Wrightwood.
I really noticed this after moving back to Chicago from Miami Beach. Seaking of rudeness...as my friends and I were leaving the Art Institute a jogger ran into me and said "ugh" and kept running. I yelled back " You may want to find a time to run instead of at rush hour." I couldn't believe he said this to me. I don't think I'm gross or anything.
Still there are extraordinary instances of kindness like when I was digging around my car and three people offered to help me get out. It was below zero.

Like the other day, I was shopping at Jewel on Broadway and Addison, this store employee told me to re-organize their shelf and put everything neatly in order after I am done with selecting items. I was seriously shocked! Then there are people who are simply indifferent and won't give a d**m about you or simply take pleasure in other people's troubled situations.

This reminds me of driving along Wabash yesterday. A pedestrian was walking across Wabash at Ontario when a cyclist who had been riding west on Ontario made a right at the red light and nearly ran over the guy walking.
She (the cyclist -bike messenger type if that helps with the seething hate) then yelled "watch where the **** you're going, golf boy!" at him. He looked so confused. If only I had had a stick for her spokes on me at the time.
I think it's a nationwide problem. Maybe it's the budding geezer in me talking, but it just seems like every generation becomes more self-absorbed than the last. It doesn't help that today's parents seem to be teaching their precious little darlings that nothing and nobody matters more than them. Make my kid follow rules? How dare you cramp their creative spirit! My little angel is so perfect (s)he doesn't need rules.
Also, I have theorized that in a quest to become a more "civilized" society where assault is criminalized even if the recipient damn well deserves it, we've actually become a coarser society in some ways. Dickjags now know they can shoot their mouths off as much as they want (or leave litter or dog crap in your yard) and nobody will touch them, because the minute someone does, the police get involved.
I miss the good ol' days when society looked the other way when someone who desperately needed a tune-up got it; I miss the days when there were actual, immediate consequences to being an antisocial a-hole.

Well said Drover. Chicago used to be a town where you'd get a quick punch in the nose if you stepped out of line and as a result Chicagoans used to be more civil. White collar guys like my father too, when I was a kid I saw him hand out a couple of impromptu beatings, he didn't let his tie and jacket hold him back.
I've confronted 20-somethings over their rudeness and they're just oblivious---they don't even know they're acting like jerks. I'm never unintentionally rude, when I'm a jerk I know it.
I like this. One time I saw a couple of teenagers talking obscenely really REALLY loudly behind a woman with a few kids. Out of no where this guy gets up and punches one of the teenagers. They left the bus and the everyone congratulated him on a job well done. Ahhh..the good ole' days.....

Have you had similiar experience lately?
I had similar experiences the whole 30 years I lived in Chicago/burbs. Chicagoans aren't a particularly polite lot. Look at some of the things (including myself) we say on these forums
so much for the midwest's reputation of being friendly

1. Its the economy. Its hit he midwest especially hard and people are reacting accordingly. After 14 yrs of living in Chicago I have noticed that the general vibe of the city tends to be particularly sensitive to external stressors.
2. Its a big city. People are already fairly rude in big cities to begin with and the bigger the city gets usually the ruder the people get. And as New York is now prohibitively expensive for all but the most wealthy the influx into Chicago is increasing. Not to mention New Yorkers moving here because they can't afford to live in New York any more.
3. Not enough dancing. Especially in the grocery stores. If everyone took a few moments a day to bust a move the world really would be a better place...

Reminds me of when I was a kid growing up out south here.
When I was a kid, 11 or 12 years old or so, the older kids (15-16) would check us. I do not see kids doing this anymore. Maybe I'm missing it but older kids in my hood would really keep us in line.
I remember plenty of times where friends I was with would do something uncivil and a few older kids would descend on us to harass and kick our asses a bit. I recall one time where my buddy spit on the sidewalk in a shopping area. Two older kids saw it and walked over to demand he "pick it up". My friend refused, which was a bad idea. They ended up putting his face in it.
Of course, I also remember a time when it was not unacceptable for unrelated adults to yell or swat your butt if you where young and being an ass.
We should bring back these grand traditions. It takes a village and all of that.
