my girlfriend and i will be taking a trip to chicago towards the end of november. i am looking for tips on places to check out from the natives. there is a list of the obvious tourist spots we will be hitting, and i'm really looking forward to all of them, but i would like to see a little more. something thats not necessarily as touristy, but very chicago-y. also, i'm looking for a place to stay still. i would like to avoid the standard best western or holiday inn sort of place. i'm looking more for a house for rent for a week, or a b&b without absolutely kiling the budget.

oh yea, i will be proposing while there as well. we are both big fans of art museums and so i think i've decided to do it at the art institute outside at night. she definitely doesn't want anything very public, so i was wondering what specific area would work best.

thanks for all the help, i'm looking forward to visiting your beautiful city

First off, congratulations!

There are a bunch of threads on this forum already for "off the beaten path" visitor spots. Just search, visiting, tourist, etc.

As for the proposal, I might recommend heading down on the metra to the Museum of Science and Industry. It has a breathtaking staircase that leads down to a pond. It's very close to the lake a well as a Japanese garden across the pond. It is much much quieter than Millennium Park and will give you a more private and placid scene for your proposal.

There are some really nice, secluded gardens just off of Michigan Ave along the AIC.

Theres also the new Pritzker Grden which is alongside the recently opened Modern Wing

Just keep in mind these gardens likely likely close when the museum does.

If you're going to venture to the southside, as Surly mentioned the lagoon at the science museum is very nice

And theres also Promontory Point, which is on the other side of Lake Shore Drive

The first garden is ungated, I've been in there well after 9 PM with no problems. The fountain however, will be off in November.

this is more about the "how" than the "what", but get out of the central part of the town by taking the CTA. Rapid transit lines run throughout the city and the nice part is that outside of the downtown area, they are virtually all elevated (hence the "el") and not only will get you to more off the beaten path locales, but will give you the views and sense of the city that are incredible.

as for the proposal: I'm assuming your girlfriend doesn't know anything about this web site...or at least hoping she doesn't.
