Hi all,
I'm from UK and am coming to Chicago for three months this September. I wanted to get an idea of how much it would cost to rent an apartment in the Chicago area (prefer the city although I don't mind the suburbs if it's within reasonable distance from the city centre),

I only need the most basic (but clean/well maintained) accommodation - a studio or 1 bed appartment with shower/bath and cooking area facility as my budget is very tight. Can anyone tell me what I'd expect to pay per month for this kind of accommodation? This info would help me so when I go I'll have a good idea of what the current rental rates should be.

Actually if anyone has any links or tips of where to rent I'd appreciate that too.

Many thanks!

The challenge will be finding a sublease or temporary situation that meets your exact timeframe.

Craigslist is a very good option. However, I would check out their "sublet/temporary" apartment listings: city of chicago sublets & temporary classifieds - craigslist

There are also corporate apartments in Chicago but these are typically very expensive.

You can try to get a room at the YMCA in Niles. The thing is they dont have cooking facilities. They only have microwaves in the snack areas.

You know when I bought in the Gold Coast years ago, I absolutely could not believe the number of places that were carpeted.

It seriously boggles the mind. Why carpeting? Really?

The first thing that most people do when they buy in an older high-rise is rip out the carpet and put in hardwood floors.

When you're potty-training your kid, you really appreciate hardwood floors!
