I plan to move back to Chicago from Florida. The only thing that is really worrying me is I now have a Chihuahua that means the world to me. She has lived her whole life in hot Florida and she loves the heat and the sun. She also loves running around her fenced backyard and gets very scared if I take her for walks. When we have a grey, "cold" day (meaning cooler than 70 degrees) she shakes and is very inactive and seems depressed. I am concerned about having to take her out on walks 5 times a day to do her business -- especially if it is freezing out. I am planning to live in an apartment in Chicago which means she won't have her own yard. I am hoping for tips or reassurance that Chihuahuas can adjust to cold, grey weather. The first time I moved to Chicago many years ago my cat never did seem to adjust to apartment living and got diabetes shortly thereafter and passed away.

We have two of them and no, they don't like the cold. Ours just look out the door, sniff the cold air and give me a WTF look. The temperature threshold on ours is roughly 35-40 degrees, which is lower than yours. Regardless, the Chihuahua DNA is still in Zacatecas it appears! Winter in the midwest is just not natural to them.

So you'll have to leash the dog up and carry it outside, preferably with boots on or its feet will get cold. And no, they don't like the boots either! It's a pain in the a--. You can train it to use a puppy pad but if you do that, keep it away from any carpet or rugs. They tend to confuse some soft surfaces with their pad. Better to take it outside to go to the bathroom all the time.

Thanks for the insight about Chicago Chihuahuas. I was wondering if I should try to paper train her but when I tried in the past she would do her business anywhere but the paper. So I am glad to hear that you think it is just better to carry a Chihuahua outside with her jacket and boots on. I was wondering if the boots were a good idea. Sorry to hear they don't like them. Do your dogs get depressed all winter or do they seem fine inside?

Seriously our Italian Greyhound hated winter. Shame there's 9 months of winter in Chicago. I'd love to be in FL!

There's actually only 3 months of winter in Chicago. The rest of the year temps are within reasonable toleration for most people, and all dogs and cats. I once saw flamingos going about their business outside in upper 30's temps in February at the Lincoln Park Zoo.

Im moving from LA to chicago w/ a little dog and I was worried about the same thing. Ive been looking online and found some stuff that seems like it could be helpful.

If you have a place with and balcony, there is this sod that you can buy and put it out there for your dog to use,and they bring you need sod every week heres the link:

Pet Patio Pickup, Inc. - Chicago's premier pet waste removal service for downtown dog owners

And here is a website that makes super warm custom made coats for your dog:

Dog Coats & Dog Raincoats - Blue Willow Dog Coats for Greyhounds, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds

Hope that helps!

Hold on. Let me buy you a one-way ticket on Greyhound to Florida for you and your greyhound.

No need to thank me. It is my pleasure. Have a nice life.
