Used to be 61st, now 64th. One day soon it will go down to the graveyard (67th). Only reason it doesn't it sensitivities about the university community "taking over" woodlawn. They are thus doing it in steps.

When looking at Chicago, think of more than miles. You need to think about the access to public transit and expressways. My apartment in Lakeview was closer to downtown than my house in Berwyn but my commute to the Loop is a lot faster than when I lived in Lakeview, both by train and, especially, driving.

Nine miles is as good as you're going to do with any measure of safety involved. To really find nice homes in safe communities in that price range you need to head way out into the boondocks. Or you'll have to live in the hood. You could buy a 1-Bedroom condo in Lakeview on that budget, but houses are in the millions in that popular neighborhood.

Everyone in Chicago wants three things in a place to live: (1) safety, (2) affordability, and (3) proximity to the Loop. Unless you really find that truly unique circumstance, you can only ever have two out of three.
I'm astounded by the people who want to move to Chicago for "city life" but still want to live in a single family home.

Buy a freaking one bedroom apartment and shut up already. What is it with these inane searches?

It takes me about 20-25 minutes by train from East Lake View to downtown. If I drive using L.S.D and traffic is good I can get downtown in ten minutes.

I'm one of those people. Maybe they have kids. Live with kids in a condo for a week, and you'll have a different opinion.

Very hard to find a one bed room apartment big enough for oneself, spouse, and kid(s).

^ Don't you see? That is how anyone that has a total household income of 100k and under a year with a couple of kids should live. If a couple is not making 100k total and above they are not working hard enough. ^
