Wonder what happened to the OP? Did they ever move to Chicago? I would think the winter would be pretty shocking coming from a warm climate. It's not just a couple of days of really brutal single digit temps that get you, it's the months and months of sunless days, ugly brown landscape, and general gloom. Chicago has it's dirt and grit like any city, and that's magnified in the winter. Wish I knew if the OP moved!

Surely you can't be speaking about this most recent winter, right? I tracked temps in CA for a bit before heading out here and, on quite a few occasions, it was warmer in Chicago than it was in LA. I don't even remember if the grass ever turned brown. The winter we just had in Chicago, minus a few days here and there, was crazy mild, mild enough for even a born and raised SoCal guy to not get too startled.

Sticky humid midwest weather though? My grandparents in Tucson were once in Minnesota where I grew up in the summer during a heat wave, and they basically said the heat was worse than what they experience in Arizona. I'd agree with that. Dry heat is a lot more comfortable to me than humid, sticky heat is.
Heat index or not. it has never been close to 110 for 2 weeks straight. We consider it a heat wave here when it's in the low 90s for more than a couple days in a row. With all due respect to those used to a "dry heat," this isn't Mississippi or Florida -- we have among the mildest summers in the country here. I can forgive anyone who spent their entire life near the Arctic circle who thinks Twin Cities summers ar unbearable. Anyone else is a whiner.
