Default Hyde Park/Kenwood/Bronzeville Apartment Suggestions?

Hey everyone!

I am about 85% sure I will have to move to Chicago at the end of October.

I just returned from having an interview there, and stayed in Washington Park area. My husband and I think we want to live in the Hyde Park (or Kenwood, or Bronzeville) area but are open to similar area suggestions.

We're looking for a large 1 bedroom or two bedroom place in a mixed income type of community. We'd prefer a higher percentage of black residents. I'm going to be speaking Spanish all day at work, but I really don't want to have to in my neighborhood- I'm going to need a break! I'll be commuting to Mt. Sinai Hospital on 15th and California, by car.

Our requirements:
Off Street Parking
Heat Included
Washer/Dryer IN UNIT
Dishwasher

Our wants:
Other utilities Included
Hardwood floors
In a newer remodeled three/four flat
~$1300 if other utilities included, ~$1000 if only heat is included

Income minimums will not be a problem, but income restricted maximums probably would be. We'd only need it for one year, as we will purchase something in the summer. I wouldn't say that we're against living in the suburbs (because we'll drive a lot anyway) but if it is going to be suburbs, it needs to be very close to the city! I don't want to drive more than 20-25mins BY STREET to get to the hospital. (I won't be commuting during rush hour)

What I'm asking for is actual apartment suggestions by name! I know there are a lot of places in renovated condo type buildings that have "for rent" signs in their windows all over the place, but I'm trying to find a place from here, so that's not as helpful.

If all else fails we'll rent one of those all utilities included, way too expensive apartments in one of the mega towers in south loop (ie Streeter Place) that we could feel fine about renting sight unseen. But we'd really prefer not to.

Thanks!!!

So far this is all I've found on this board, and it doesn't include washer/dryer... sigh.

This place is nice and safe! ..., Recommended, Jul 09, 2008, apartment review of Madison Hyde Park Apartments in Chicago, IL

I know this is alot farther, but west Rogers Park is a pretty nice area. Especially since you won't be travelling during rush hour. Actually, I don't think its much farther than your commute to h.p. or Bronzeville would be, now that I think of it. Rent is very reasonable, but the washer-dryer requirement may be an issue. Otherwise, it may be worth looking into. A friens of mine was paying around $850; one bedroom HUGE living room, but again, washer and dryer was in the basement. He was around western and pratt.

Thanks h8nla, but I don't want to live northside... and Roger's Park is about as far north as you can get before Evanston, correct? I'd be willing to take heat included off our list before I removed the washer/dryer in unit from our list of requirements! LOL I know that sounds backwards, but we've simply had enough of laundry rooms/laundry mats, quarters and cards!!

Thanks Manigault! This place has terrible reviews though:

Do you live here? Do you like it? Sometimes the only people that leave reviews are those who have problems, so you can't always get a fair picture of a place...

I've never lived there but know people who do. I don't know why it got the bad reviews but there are a lot of new townhouses being built around there and near Mercy Hospital. Further, they are trying to put the Olympic Village just east of Lake Meadows so the place will surely have a lot of security.

Many folks moving to Chicago end up in Regents Park, too, a Hyde Park place once featured on '60 Minutes' in a story about the developer, Bill Clinton. That is, the other Bill Clinton. You can't beat its location in 'Indian village'. It has much better ratings than Lake Meadows, but if you don't rent a parking space, you'll have to walk two blocks to park.

BUMP

I'm still looking, does anyone else have any suggestions? I had found a couple promising places and then found out they are part of the low income housing redevelopment and we aren't qualified to live in them (
