Giving child molesters a chance to reoffend is the problem. This should be a 1 strike and you're out situation. If a person can't control themselve and decides to prey on children, well, then they should get their freedom card taken away and spend the rest of their days in jail or in the ground. And don't give me this BS about them having a 'disease' or 'sickness'. If that's the case, then again, I say protect the children and lock these sickos up until they pass away.

All I did was state facts and that makes me one of "the enemy" now? Like that even would invalidate my argument. I have a really hard time doing anything to defend pedophiles but I hate people like you more than I hate them. I never said you were the enemy (unless you're in fact, on the sex offender list, in which case, yes, you would be the enemy), but someone defending a pedophile or molester in anyway deserves no respect from me. Do I have a mentality of hatred for child molesters? Hell yes! And I'm proud of it. If the child molester on my block ends up in the alley behind his house with no pulse, I won't feel the least bit of remorse for him whatsoever. I might even have a little party to celebrate that he's no longer around to possibly reoffend.

Shortly after my husband and I were married, a friend of ours was accused of molestation by his 14-year-old babysitter. He was arrested and promptly lost his job. He had full custody of his two young children, who were taken away and sent to live with their useless mother. We didn't believe the charges, not simply because he was our friend, but because we were named witnesses for events that never happened (nonexistent parties where he supposedly led her into another room). Our friend was accused of fondling her breasts and performing oral sex on her. Naturally there was no evidence, as these instances supposedly took place weeks before. Our friend could only rely on the lack of evidence, the people (such as us) who testified that the circumstances around the events did not happen, his several character witnesses, and the fect that her bizarre stories changed several times in the course of the trial. It was in this room--it was in that room--we were naked--no wait, he was naked but I wasn't--wait, I mean I was naked but he wasn't. We were hopeful that everything would turn out OK for our friend.

It didn't. He was convicted and sent to prison for a year. He is a registered sex offender for the rest of his life and probably has quite a bit of trouble getting a job. He was convicted of oral copulation with a child under 16, which probably sparks quite a bit of outrage. We haven't seen or spoken to him since he got out of prison. That girl has an obvious crush on our friend, as well as my husband, and as badly as we felt about it, we had to distance ourselves from him. He'll never have custody of his children again ... well, his daughter is probably 18 now, anyway, and very likely completely screwed up. Her mother and stepfather were not good people, and who knows what she thinks about the whole situation with her father.

The problem with Megan's Law and all it entails is that nobody knows the whole story. Someone could find my friend on a sex offender site, see "oral copulation with a child," and start railing on the Internet about how he should be castrated, locked up forever or killed. I doubt one person would ever read the court transcripts and think, "Hmmm, maybe this guy was railroaded by a spurned little girl and a stupid jury. Maybe the public defender wasn't very good at his job."

Look, I'm a parent. I have three kids, and when I hear about the truly horrible things that some people do--brutal rapes and strangulation and all that--I think I could easily take justice into my own hands. I know that if something happened to one of my children, my fury and need for vengeance would be extreme. But I have to step back and think about my friend. There are a lot of sexual criminals running free, but there are also a lot of innocent men behind bars or on that registry for the rest of their lives. Until any of us know the facts, and I mean beyond what we read in some lurid article, it's best just to stay out of it.

I hear your point. Obviously, there's a grey line in this "child molestation" thing. I think the hard and fast rule of 18 and under = child is kind of goofy, especially with the sexualization of teens in our society (ie, look at mtv for examples). More so, it's sort of an injustice to real child sexual abuse victims to label a 21 year old as a sex offender because he had consensual sex with a 17 year old.

But, if a you have a straight up child molester, especially a repeat offender...two words: chop chop.

I thought it was interesting how this guy hung his head during sentencing. Shame? I understand that many sexual abusers were abused themselves. It doesn't make it right but like many a bad thing, is a vicious circle.

And ya, he should never have been released.
