Portage Park had rising gang troubles in the 80s and 90s. It's not like they just up and left. It's still a safe neighborhood by city standards.

I always thought Portage Park was a fairly safe neighbourhood then again, gangs can walk into any neighbourhood and raise havoc. What a shame.
Yeah, I always thought so too. I've been taking quite a few walks around the Portage Park area recently and exploring a little (don't ask me why). Been wondering if, at my age, it might be time to retire from the fast-paced lakefront lifestyle, buy a little house someplace like Portage Park, live a quiet domestic life and do yard work or whatever...

I think those Far Northwest Side neighborhoods tend to be the lowest-crime in the city. Guess there's really no part of town that is completely untouched by gang activity, however.

Of course not... there's a little invention known as a motor vehicle that can transport humans from point A to point B relatively fast.

And what age is that, Andrew? : D

The far northwest side is 'safest' because most city workers: fire, cops, etc are required to be city residents, so they reside on the far fringes: Portage Park, Jefferson Park, Edgebrook, Norwood Park, Forest Glen.

JP in particular has easy access to public trans. If you are serious with regards to a move, pm me.

Also a neighborhood doesn't need to have gangs to have violence if you have a spot that attracts people that are not from the neighborhood.

could have sworn I saw a VL on Austin by St Roberts in Jeff Park. That's the second that I've seen in the area recently. Really depressing to see a once very safe and quiet neighborhood deteriorating so quickly.
