Yep. I have to be in that area Tuesday morning and would normally take the bus, but I'm taking the Red Line to Grand instead. It may add 10 minutes to my trip, probably less. No big deal.
Aren't you from Wheaton or some such place? If so this isn't even any of your go**am business.
In any event this Winfrey woman can get publicity without throwing a wrench into the lives of the city's people, she seems quite adept at that. And at gathering star-struck admirerers.
MOD CUT . Yes, from Wheaton, and I take offense to your use of the lords name in vain. You know how conservative we wheatonites are!! And I hope you are also smart enough to hear the sarcasm in this reply as conservative I am not.
Anyway, my dollars go as far as yours do, when I visit the city of Chicago and pay your outrageous sales taxes while boosting your sales on a day such as this. Get over it already. You're obviously one of those "glass is 1/2 EMPTY" people. This "Winfrey woman", as you refered her, has EARNED her place in ALL she does, and it sounds to me like I detect a tad of resentment........Ever researched on what GOOD she does for this nation and world? And by the way, my wife and friends are working on going down with "the girls" and I'm sure they will have a ball. Sorry they will add to you "city folk's" disruption. I still think people need to lighten up..... It's a lousy 2 days out of your lives. CONSTRUCTION in this area does much more and longer damage than that. Give me a break.
I guess, but if you're someone that regularly takes Mich. Ave buses, it's bad enough on a regular day. Let's just compound that by closing major intersections for two days.
They aren't closing down a single intersection. Grand and Illinois both run below Michigan at that point. That's why they picked the stretch.
Cars can jump on Columbus, buses are going a few streets west from Ohio to Wacker or into the Loop in the case of the 151.....
I still don't see why the transportation issue is SO HUGE to a lot of people. It's not like they're closing every bridge across the river, or shutting down Lakeshore for a week....
They closed both levels of Wacker Drive for 2 years right through the heart of the loop and life went on....
Maybe people can take a 134, 135 or 136. They cover the lakefront from Devon down to Fullerton and use Wacker Drive over to LaSalle. That covers the loop and it's not affected.
If you want Michigan between Ohio and the River, take it to Ohio and walk the rest of the way - or just stay on the bus as it goes east a few blocks and south on Dearborn and Clark. Michigan will be seeing less traffic anyway, so the buses might actually move faster in that area. If you're going south of Ohio, maybe just do the 134/135/136 and get off on Wacker Drive around Columbus, Michigan, Wabash or State and walk north across the river.
Or take the Red Line. A lion's share of the detours are to the north-lakeshore express buses - which can mostly be served by taking the train as an alternative.
Once again, all the complaining on Citydata had absolutely no influence on Oprah's decision to close Mich. ave. The adds are running, and it's official, like it or not. My wife and her friends are looking forward to the day and hope to get a bracelet in to the main stage area. As for City data...... posters on here complain and argue quite passionately about many topics, none of which means anything in what's going on in our nation. A link here and there to try and support their cause, mostly negative "doom and gloom" for the trolls to let out their frustrations. Hope those of you that were against this can regroup and enjoy the moment.......maybe it will become a yearly thing for Oprah! That would be cool! And my kids are still mad we wouldn't let them cut school and go see the black-eyed peas for FREE! They'll get over it, it builds character!
And I used to LOVE Koolaid, by the way, drank it all the time as a kid, or at least when my mom would let us. Maybe that's why life seems so sweet these days. Wonder if Crystal lite has the same result? Hope so. As to the reference of the Guyana tragedy and Jim Jones....That was a tragic, tragic time in life, one that should be left to the respect it deserves for all those precious lives lost, especially all those children, not an analogy for the "doomers" to use as if all positive folk are "drinking the koolaid". I hear that a LOT on the Real estate thread.....those of us that had anything positive to say about RE, were accused of having a HUGE pitcher of Koolaid daily. Give me a break!

Your pop psychology which seeks to interpret an unwillingness to bend one's knee as mere resentment and frustration is more likely a rationalization of your willingness to kow-tow to your betters. It was one thing when we kow-towed to a nobility which had a monopoly on violence but to do it for celebrities? I maintain this woman has no business disrupting a single second of the lives of any of the citizenry.
Anyway it's a rare that the servile admit to it. And a rarer DuPage County inhabitant who should be sticking his nose into our business from 25 miles away. Aren't you supposed to be busy defending Wheaton from Naperville?

yes, yes like i said, argument flawed.
but still silly IMO since the president found Grant Park to be just fine....
besides, I think the ridiculously cranky drivers will be more annoyed than the transit users. which could result in hilarity, actually.

First of all, 100's of thousands commute to work in downtown daily, so to act like a DuPage county citizen has no "knowledge" of the closing of MI ave and what it means is ignorant at best. You need to lighten up! That was the point of my last post, in case you didn't get it! As to the "defense" of Wheaton to Naperville, the 2 are in complete different leagues. Which one is "best" is irrelevant, as the 2 communities are night and day in size and population. Proximity to public transportation and long commutes are the only thing I have always argued are better in communities like Wheaton and the many others east/north of Naperville. So no worries, as mentioned, we'll continue to enjoy Chicago like the many others in the suburbs and are happy Oprah will put our great city on the map, even if for a day! Try to relax and have a good holiday weekend. FMV.
