i may be moving to Chicago in the next month due to work. The job is in Carol Stream...how close is this to Chicago? Is this considered a suburb of Chicago, or a whole separate city?

Could one live in Chicago and easily commute to Carol Stream?

Thanks.

The guy's a lying troll, don't listen to him.

The commute to Carol Stream would not be fun. Depending on what part of the city you live in, bank on 90 minutes each way and hope for the best.

how nice is Carol Stream? I'm looking for apartments on the west edge of Chicago, is this a decent area to be? Funds are somewhat limited. I'd like to stay around $750/mo for a 1 bdrm apartment, but would be willing to go as high as $900. Any ideas? Thanks.

The west side of Chicago is rough. If you want a relatively urban living environment and relatively close access to Chicago's nightlife, consider Oak Park. It's a reasonably urbane environment, would put you closer to Carol Stream (but still not a fun commute though perhaps tolerable) and has quick train access to downtown where you can then hook up with other train lines to north side nightlife destinations. Carol stream is a boring vanilla suburb. Don't bother unless you have kids.

You might want to ask this in the Chicago burbs forum. I've never been to Carol Stream but nearby Elmhurst is alright and you'll be able to find something in your budget. Oak Brook is really nice with beautiful housing stock but the commute will be a bit longer (maybe 25 minutes??)

ETA: Seconds thoughts on Oak Brook; it will be tough to find something in your budget there.

carol stream is the uglier sibling of bloomingdale, or a glendale heights stripped of much of the crime and gang activity, with no downtown, not much commercial establishments. It's basically a safe bedroom community with a rural feel to it.

Yes. The commute from Chicago would be hellish. Depending on your schedule, it could take anywhere from 45 minutes to centuries

The problem with Carol Stream and commuting from Chicago is the lack of both direct highway access and good surface street alternates.

It is most an OK place to work, and has some decent housing that is fairly priced, but it not well situated with regard to commuter routes. It is not convenient from either 290 or 88, the two major methods of getting to the western burbs. You end up backtracking and/ or taking a mix of surface streets that are clogged with stoplights.

There are towns that are technically further west that are easier to get to because of better access from the highways.

The suggestion to look to living in another suburb is not too bad, though then you would spend the whole trip on surface streets, and the average rush hour speed, factoring in stoplights, is abysmal.

RURAL??? I agree with you on everything except that. Very typical suburban with traffic kind of town. You need to get west of the Fox River to find rural these days or maybe way south suburbs
