I've lived in St. Louis, Charlotte, Durham, Memphis and now Chicago. I guess I will start with my least favorite.

Memphis pros are the mild winters and dirt cheap housing. Cons very much a black and white city. Never seen or felt the disenfranchisement as a black male like I saw in Memphis. Way too conservative for my taste and the religion thing between the southern baptist and pentecostals gets old very fast.

Durham was a great college town with many friendly people. Cons was being too small.

Charlotte had a lot of transplants from other parts of the country that made it very easy to meet people but the money wasn't right to keep me there.

St. Louis is probably the most under rated. Lots to do. Great neighborhoods and parks. Decent schools. Beautiful rolling hills and trees. Summers are way too hummid. Too much ice in the winter.

Chicago negatives is the traffic and weather. The city has so much to offer due to its size. Lots of culture with many opportunities to build what ever life you want. Much friendlier than other cities.

I hear you. Though I'm a white male, visiting my sister in Memphis always aggravates me to no end because of the racism.
