"bad parts" are "bad parts", the thing is the south side is getting so much media attention, that people are now looking at it like it is far worse then everywhere else. If it was areas on the west side that was getting all the media attention right now, it would be where everyone would be focusing on.

Jesus how bad was it?? The way the news portrays the south side is like it's crime ridden. You guys have to admit some of the crimes committed are just appalling.

The "South Side" encompasses about 60% of the land area of Chicago, saying the entire South Side should be declared a "state of emergency" is just plain stupid.

first off, the west side is worse than the south side. If anything is going to be declared a state of emergency first, it will be the west side. Second, neither are bad enough to be decalred "a state of emergency". Plus, the south side has alot of neighborhoods that are some of the nicest in Chicago. Hyde Park is an area that most people could not afford to live in. Not to mention, over all crime is clearing up in Chicago compared to what it was a couple years ago. Things have been way worse.

Here's a taste of how bad it was: in 1993, Englewood alone saw 80 murders -- and that was just for the first half of the year. IIRC they ended up with well over 100 by the end of the year.

The murder rate of the entire country is down by more than a third over the last 20 (well, 19) years. Chicago has had the added benefit of forcing many of its most likely candidates to commit murder to move. Good for us, not so good for the other cities around us

The whole city, not just south side - but it's pretty impressive as far as violent crimes:

1991:

Total Crimes: 323,909
Property: 233,387
Violent: 90,522

2008:

Total Crimes: 167,427
Property: 131,663
Violent: 35,764

Total Crimes: -48%
Property: -44%
Violent: -61%

In 1991 there was a violent crime for every 30 people living in the city. That's now dropped to a violent crime for every 80 people in the city.

Why not just revive old "South Side" sucks threads? Or the "Why do so many threads trash South Side and West Side"
