Same as it would be hoooked up inside. I saw a place w/ a setup like this where everything was outside. The duct work and plubming went outside and hooked up to everything. The problem is that the porch needs to be ripped off and rebuilt, and I'm really worried about putting the mechanicals back outside on the porch (will the city let me?). The enclosed porch is pretty sturdy, and insulated. It's practically an addition to the house, but it's just real real old and about to fall over.

well, the city code does allow electrical outlets and gas hookups ( for grills) on balconies.. Not sure how code would treat a furnace or gas drier .. check w/ an electrician and plumber/gas company for the specific requirements . if the porch is renovated/replaced, sounds like the wiring and plumbing would be brought up to code then ..

Just make it a full on addition to the building after you tear down the old porch. Make a concrete foundation to frame off of.

It probably is not strictly by code. The difficulty comes in how your interpret the enclosed porch. If it is a legal addition and is not being used to meet egress rquirements you are probably OK. If not you may want to rethink things. City of Chicago - Porches: Related Building Code Sections

so I talked to a porch builder - it should be legal as long as the porch is permitted to be an enclosed porch.

Am still going to check w/ city if I can find out who to call.
