well, a true Chinese looking for quality chinese food for sure won't go to Lee Wing Wah. They might have cheaper price and bigger dishes, but quality-wise is not good at all.

And one should know that Chicago is relatively bad in chinese food because of the poor demand. Typical chinatown people are not looking for quality but quantity. If you want really good authentic chinese food, I would recommend Shanghai Terrace at Peninsula, but then it's outside of chinatown already ;-)

I've eaten at Lee Wing Wah with several different Chinese people. it's not the best in Chinatown, but it's not the worst, either.

There are a number of places in Chicago's Chinatown you can get authenticly Chinese food that uses good ingredients and would be comparable to neighborhood restaurants in China (based on my eating experience in China. And I ate a lot in China - it is the one foreign country I've ever visited where I gained weight on the trip. Every other international trip I've ever had, I've lost weight.).

What Chicago generally lacks is highly refined Chinese food, and regional variety. There is more regional variety in Chinatown than there used to be, but it's still not comparable to bigger Chinatowns. I haven't been to Shanghai Terrace, but other than perhaps that, I'm not aware of any truly high-end Chinese places in Chicago that have hung on. There are a few places trying right now, and there have always been a couple here and there that try to make a go of it, but there just doesn't seem to be a culture to support high-end Chinese food in Chicago yet. I think within 10 years that might change, though.

There are more newer places starting to pay attention to things like service and ambiance and decor (and cleanliness), as these improvements are starting to be demanded more not just by Western diners, but by Chinese diners, too. It will be interesting to see what sort of impact places like Go4Food and Han202 have on the local Chinese food scene.

hehe, in fact the owner of owner of Go4Food is my friend, and they have pretty decent dishes.

Han202 in my opinion is more targeted for the western audience, their presentation is very good.

Years ago thee was atraditional restaurant over one of the buildings. I swear it felt like walking up 30 steps it was so steep. The service was devine and the 7 course meal-was fabulous. I don't remember the name but it was certainly worth the extra exercise to get to it. I suppose the owners did and the kids closed it.
