Hi everyone, I've been reading the forums for awhile now and moved to Chicago in september. I've been looking at jobs at non-profit organizations and a lot of them are based out of Evanston. I live in Wicker Park and wonder how difficult of a commute it is to get to Evanston. Google maps says "30 minutes" of driving time and to take public transportation, about an hour and a half. Does this seem realistic?

Do you think looking for jobs in Evanston even worth it at this point, or would the commute be too ridiculous/stressful/time consuming?

thanks!

Do you own in Wicker Park?

If not, look for a job there, and move. If yes, be prepared to drive a relatively normal commute time for the area.

The commute time from Wicker Park to Evanston isn't that bad for the Chicago area. Keep in mind a lot of folks commute from the far suburbs to the City and the reverse.

If you have a car (and you probably do since you mentioned driving times) you will have a choice of many routes to Evanston as there are so many local street choices in addition to 90/94. 30 to 40 minutes each way sounds realistic.

I hope you enjoy Chicago and post if you have more questions

The public transit time may actually be less if you are traveling during rush hour, because the purple line express will be running, which goes straight from Belmont to Howard, and then beyond into Evanston. This train runs between 6 and 10 am, and then roughly between 2:30 and 6:30 PM. Also, depending on where you live, you can take the METRA Union Pacific North line, which has multiple stops in Evanston. It is accessable at Clybourn station, which is roughly at Armitage and Ashland. That train ride is <20 minutes.

I'd suggest avoiding 90/94 if possible and maybe just taking LSD North to Sheridan Rd to get to Evanston. Otherwise, blue line to purple line would be a good bet, and I seriously doubt that would take you 90 minutes.

If you drive to Evanston during rush hour, I personally would take Western Ave, which turns into Asbury once you get into Evanston. Taking 94 has never saved me any time, since when you get off at dempster/old orchard, you're really not even all that close to Evanston. Lake Shore Drive seems like it would be a huge hassle to get to during rush hour, so I wouldn't bother trying to go east if you can get to Western easily. That's just my experience with the commute.

I think 30 to 40 minutes sounds like a reasonable amount of time for the drive, especially if you leave a little early. I definitely wouldn't rule out Evanston as a place to work, and if you're only renting now, a place to live also. I lived in Evanston for 3 years prior to moving to the city and really liked the area... which is why I'm going up there so often, to visit friends.
