Default The Chicago experience: Chicago vs NYC

This is just for fun... Chicago and NYC are very similar in so many ways. Please name something that is distinvtly different that sets the two cities apart. What do you think?

I think it is either Broadway of the diamond district. .

To be honest, I think we're all pretty exhausted with the constant NYC v. Chicago comparison/contrast threads/posts.

IMO -Chicago and NYC are nothing alike. The people, culture, attitude, pace are different. The only thing they share are urbanity and awesome skylines. Both cities are great.

The main difference is residents of NYC are leaving in droves while Chicago residents are staying put.

How do you figure? Best I can tell, both are rather transient cities with plenty of people coming and going. NYC proper's population has been steadily growing. In fact NYC is about the only "legacy" city that never experienced a substantial population loss. They lost 10% between the 1970 and 1980 census but that's it. By the 2000 census they had regained all the population they lost. Chicago is still 25% down from its population peak.

So what you're talking about is a turnover of higher-earning taxpayers being replaced by lower-earning taxpayers. I don't see that kind of exodus happening here unless there's a huge shift in the tax structure. New York taxes income at a far higher rate than Illinois -- NYC residents pay as much or more income taxes to the city before they ever pay the state as Illinois residents pay total. Illinois tax structure shifts more of the burden to sales tax, which the rich can manage how little or how much they pay simply by modifying their spending behavior.
