This doesn't fit your NW criteria, but my cousin took me to a place near DePaul U. I was surprised at the portions of meat (way much more than I could fit on the pita) and the taziki sauce was really good. Good prices. Coming from a Greek family who actually owned a Gyros joint on Lawrence in the 70's/early 80's, I'm pretty picky. I also like Nick's and King's as mentioned by a previous poster.

The BEST gyros I have ever had were at the Parthenon Restaurant in Greektown. They produce their own gyro meat as opposed to buying the cones from the Big 3.

Anyone try Windy City Gyros in Lakeview (Broadway just south of Irving Park Road)? I have no idea if it's good, but it's close to my house and I may want to give it a shot one of these days. I've only had the soft-serve ice cream there.

It is not bad, but it is a bit greasy when they "finish it off" on the grill. (Which is quite often when it is busy.) You can ask them to cook it well done to counter this a bit though. For some reason I do not like the sauce there however. I normally have my own Tzatziki Sauce that I buy at Trader Joe's that is actually quite good.
I prefer going there in the daytime when it is less busy and they do not have to finish it off on the grill as often. At night, business is pretty constant and all sorts of characters are in there from drunks to trannies, bums, taxi drivers, and cops.
