I had hot dogs and italian beef at Portillo's. Was very tasty, although I am now dying of thirst, LOL. Beautiful day in Chicago today!

I really miss Chicago beef.

Men out here are soft willed; too weak for me. They break after just one use

I think I have to shamelessly mention "Lou's Italian Beef and Sausage", since they are my family (extended). They had a restaurant in Villa Park but Lou, although one hell of a cook, isn't much for business. If you lived in Villa Park off North Ave. you may have had a chance to stop by before he hung up the apron. Now, you can still get his beef/sausage if you buy it in bulk....and ask the right person. I'm definitely a novice when it comes to the best in town but I can say without hesitation that he makes the best beef AND sausage I've had in Chicago, and I've tried a lot (incl. Portillo's)!

So I just had to update...

We stopped briefly in Lockport on our way out to Iowa and again on the way back. Lockport boasts an Aurellio's, a Brown's Chicken and a Jewel (with a Patio Ribs a little ways east on 159th) so it was the perfect "one-stop-shop" for us given our route (80/355/88).

So Thursday night, I happily nommed pizza. Then on the way home, we went to Brown's for lunch (Mmmmmmmmmmushrooms!) and popped in at Jewel to grab some Italian Beef. They didn't have Gaucho's... too far out from the city proper, I'm guessing, or Gonnella bread... but after just merrily polishing off a huge Italian Beef sandwich (with peppers, of course) I can say that Vienna on Milano French Rolls was a very acceptable substitute to my outdated palate.

And of course, now I'm wishing I'd gotten more than one package of it. LOL

I am in utter heaven, regardless. We skipped Patio (will hit it during our move), but I am so merrily filled with familiar tastes right now... it was definitely an AWESOME weekend for my Chicago-missing tummy!
