The Blue Line can be sort of a long slog out there, but it runs 24/7 (though construction has limited this for several years now). And it does drop you off in the actual terminal area (though it can still be a long walk to your plane depending on what airline you fly).

It seems like a wee bit of political cooperation would have gone a long way to making this work much better...
I've done this before, you have to board a shuttle bus which drops you off a the end of the ATS (Airport Transit System), which will take you to all terminals. The good news is that all of this service is free.

I agree that they could make this process better. At the very least they could extend the ATS to the METRA station so you only have to take one additional ride to the terminal.

One way to speed up the sluggish run to O'Hare via the Blue Line is to take the Metra Union Pacific Northwest line out of Ogilvie Transportation Center (just blocks north of Union Station), exit at the Jefferson Park stop, then walk about less than a block to reach the Jefferson Park CTA Blue Line station. From here, it's not much more distance to O'Hare. The Metra really speeds up the trip significantly, and it's a far more frequent line than the North Central. It is not, however, quite as frequent as the CTA Blue Line train itself.

I'm lazy... what you're describing requires two transfers, but just taking the slow way only requires one.
