Lavazza earns major points in my book for serving coffee in actual glass cups with a saucer. I don't drink espresso too often, but when I do, I need a no-paper-cup option.

A huge missing factor here is the lack of quality newspapers. I mean Chicago used to be a journalist/reporter kinda town. Movies were made about Chicago reporters and newspapers. Now, we're reduced to the Tribune in that insert format (the Tribune is akin to Pravda, the Soviet mouthpiece)...and that RedEye BlueEye garbage they tried a couple years ago.

Agreed. I don't think it needs to be like what Wrigleyville and Viagra Triangle is, but the problem is for a city of 2.7 million, metro of 9 million, the downtown is very lacking when it comes to nightlife. I have been to downtowns of much smaller cities/metros and they have much better downtown nightlife. I think it really enriches and makes the downtown much more exciting and cosmopolitan.

Agreed with street life. Some areas have pretty good street life like the Near North Side and Lincoln Park, but I found there to be more hustle and bustle in Boston and San Fran neighborhoods (not the downtowns) day and night than in Chicago.

Red light district would be interesting, but I don't think it's really needed. I really wish we could replace the bus system with light rail that would be my dream if though I know it won't be true. I feel with light rail would be so much more efficient and more people would definitely ride it.

Corner delis would be great too!

Red light district is not important at all but Chicago lacks funky areas accessible to downtowm....back east you can walk into areas much easier...chinatown...combat zone...italian market...little italy that are woven into the city fabric well

i say get rid of the elevetad tracks downtown and replace it with subway and develop downtown light-rail system connecting navy pier to mcCormick place and west to the United Center...and Bus-Rapid Transit as well.

Where does this idea come from that there is no nightlife downtown? There is a section of downtown that is lacking nightlife, mostly because nobody lives there. So if you happen to find yourself there, walk a few blocks to the parts of downtown that do have it. Problem solved.

Hell, let's just import Joey Buttafuoco while we're at it! Sounds like you're having some Boston (maybe NYC too?) withdrawal? There's enough NE (northeast, not Nebraska) in the NE for my taste (and for all time, for that matter), thanks. If anything, I'd support a wall to keep it there, rather than an invitation for it to 'come on down' (or 'out,' as the case may be)... (Just ask the Outer Banks of NC how they're doing with that... *shudder*.)

Oh, and as for 'funky areas,' I think Chicago has plenty of them. Maybe to be truly 'funky' (in the way a Northeastern[US]er would use that term], a certain grease threshold has to be met (actually got into an argument about this with a Brooklynite, and that's basically what he finally insisted). Maybe some of us like our funk sans grease, or mile-high pastramis, as the case may be.

The last thing I want to do is get off work, go home, and come back to a restaurant or bar a few blocks from my work.
