http://www.suntimes.com/health/1946391,CST-NWS-blackhealth18.article (broken link)

I think this is on the verge of irresponsible by the Suntimes. But then again, it did get me to read the article. While some of what the article says is true, I really feel like it's blaming whites for health issues in the black community instead of putting responsibility on those in that community. This sounds like something that would come from Jesse, Al or Rev Wright rather than from a newspaper.
But then again, it did get me to read the article so I guess, mission accomplished.

What is over the edge of responsibility are the comments made by one Steven Whitman.

you will see more and more articles like this being published all over the United States, this is being done to rally support of National Healthcare. Different media outlets lean left or right. We will see articles that reflect these viewpoints, to help support or refute this and other issues.

I would like to see how they come up with the conclusion that racism is one of the reasons black people don't have access to the latests medical treatments. It sounds like bs.
I can agree 100% on poverty though, regardless of race if you don't have money your options are limited.

Regardless of the factual accuracies and/or inaccuracies in this story, The ST is not the source that I would trust to relay this info. This scandal rag thrives on sensationalist accusations and innuendo far too often for me too trust their analysis of hard news anymore.

They are quickly becoming Chicagos very own version of the New York Post.

Steve Whitman apparently makes the argument that "racism and poverty" are the cause of this health gap, but the article provides absolutely no examples of how racism is a cause. I know that many people believe that racism causes poverty, but that relationship requires another study--and it should have been left out of this one. It would have been enough to state that poverty is a main cause of this health gap without pulling out the race card yet again.

That's what's so annoying. Why does everything have to be race this, race that? I don't like to play the race card either but I get so sick and tired of reading articles in the press or on the news about how being black is the reason for X, Y, Z.
Does racism exist? Absolutely! But we also live in the F'in USA which means anyone can do anything they want to improve their situation and no one can tell you that you can't.

I remember a few years back I was at a gas station and I was going to pick up either a Tribune edition or Sun Times. The Tribune's front page had a story about the Afghan elections, the Sun Times front page story was about J-Lo. Sun Times is good to line your bird cage, nothing else more.

Thats too funny. The ST lost me one day back in the late 90's when I purchased a paper adorned with the bold headline: RABIES THREAT LURKS.

As it turned out the story was about an outbreak of rabies amongst raccoons in rural southern Ohio, more than 400 miles away. The writer tried every which way to imply and explain how this "plague" was heading our way and we were gonna be doomed.

The Sun Times does have a trashy tabloid New York Posty aura about it, but I've actually found their local news coverage to be stronger than the Tribune's in recent years. And they have better columnists. Part of this is the decline of the Tribune, however.
