Yes, I know there are several posts on Logan Square/Palmer Square on here, but I'd like more clarification.
I've found a rental that says it's on St. Louis Ave in Logan Square (the map puts it between Kimball & Central Park Ave, and just below Palmer) for a ridiculously low price. What's up with this area? I keep seeing "west of Kimball is not great", but how far west are we talking? Is this area safe for a late-20's couple, 2 dogs, no kids?

It's all relative. This is still one of the worst parts of Logan Square, but it's no Garfield Park. I've had no problems in Logan Square west of Kimball (albeit, by less than 1/2 a block), but I generally don't hang around there, I just walk back from the blue line. What is the highest crime neighborhood you have ever lived in?

Ummm...none.
I've lived in ridiculously safe (read: boring
) neighborhoods all my life. I'm out in VA at the moment, and have spent much time in DC. I've been in some not-so-great areas of the city, and have never found myself to be particularly affected/scared.
We don't plan on hanging out outside in our neighborhood all that much, but I'd like to feel comfortable walking the few blocks from the blue line.

You get what you pay for in that area. Like SJaye said, that is the worst part of Logan Square and has quite a bit of crime spill over from Humboldt Park. South of Palmer I wouldn't live west of Kedzie at the very furthest. The closer you are to Bloomingdale the ****tier it gets. I would like to think I am pretty comfortable around crime and street smart from growing up in some crappy areas of Miami, going to college in NY and New Orleans and then living in Logan Square when I moved here. If you had a garage spot and did not walk around the 'hood a good deal it may be different but it is quite a long walk from the Western stop to Kimball and a lot can happen.

That is not a particularly great area. I wouldn't be afraid of it necessarily. But if you go 5 blocks north or east you see beautiful buildings that are affordable. Go 5 more blocks and you get into some gorgeous buildings. Why live somewhere ridiculously cheap when you can pay $300 more dollars a month and walk your dogs past beautiful gray stones right out your front door and be closer to the train?

I've lived in ridiculously safe (read: boring 
) neighborhoods all my life. I'm out in VA at the moment, and have spent much time in DC. I've been in some not-so-great areas of the city, and have never found myself to be particularly affected/scared.
