I'm a northshore native who left to live in Phoenix for the last ten years, and I am moving back to attend school at Northwestern's downtown part-time MBA program. I will be telecommuting so I am not concerned about commuting except that I would like to be close to the EL and train for easy transportation.

One area I was seeing a lot of places for rent was the 60605 area; is this area safe and a nice area or is it spotty? I've been around there as a tourist, but not sure how good it really is.

Thoughts? I am trying to find places under $1000 that are ideally 2-bedroom, but I would easily settle for a nice 1-bedroom. Just not sure what areas I should be focusing on.

I live in 60605 at 14th and Michigan, it's nice there. Lots of condos for rent around there and some good deals but I don't think you're going to find 2 bedrooms at your price, you might have a hard time finding 1 bedroom at $1000. But I'm not familiar with the entire area in the zip code.

You'll be hard-pressed to find 2-bedrooms for that price anywhere on the northside, downtown or near south side except maybe on the far north or far northwest side. You could find 2-bedrooms for that price in parts of Bridgeport and Pilsen, I've seen a few not too far from the Halsted stop on the Orange Line or in east Pilsen. That area is reasonably safe, but far from exciting.

You may be able to find a small one-bedroom for that price in the South Loop with some searching, and definitely could fine one in Bridgeport. For $1,000, you could also rent a room in a very nice condo or apartment downtown from someone looking for a roommate.

If you're bringing your car back, you'll probably need to tack on between $100 and $200 per month for parking. And if you're planning to live downtownish (and 60605 is downtownish), you should seriously consider ditching the car to save the money and/or enable you to spend more on your living situation. To visit your family in the North Shore, you can always take Metra - I'm sure even if they don't live within walking distance of a station they'll pick you up.

Ok, maybe, but just because they're advertised doesn't make them real ... I've been apartment hunting enough times to know that.

I have seen 3 bedroom apartments in Lake View for $1200-$1300 in the last year. Obviously you do not look hard enough. I have enough experience to know that.
